Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
After winning the gold medal for the decathlon in 1976, Jenner rode the wave of Olympic fame, working in sports broadcasting, public speaking and commercial endorsements. Gradually, he spiraled downward into a series of B-movie acting jobs and, finally, virtual obscurity. But using the same methods by which he rose to Olympic heights, he turned his life around and worked his way back to even greater career and personal success. Here, Jenner uses each of the 10 events of the decathlon to describe how others can do the same, a metaphor that provides an unusual and captivating way to present motivational material. Jenner's descriptions of his personal experiences are compelling, and his enthusiastic encouragement to others to find their life's mission and fulfill it is memorable. Unfortunately, the book is padded with so many quotations and anecdotes from other sources that Jenner's voice often gets lost. He also leaves out so much information about himself that it's a surprise when, late in the book, he mentions that he has been married and divorced twice and has four children. These would seem to be important elements in a story of personal journey, as would an explanation of how he managed to overcome the daunting obstacle of "200 dollars in the bank and... approximately 300,000 dollars in debt." With some judicious editing and more candor from the author, this would have been a stand-out among motivational books; as is, it's merely adequate. Literary Guild, Doubleday Book Club and Doubleday Health Book Club alternate selections. (Jan.)
Library Journal
Jenner, best known for winning a gold medal in the decathlon in the 1976 Olympic Games, was indeed a world-class athlete. He outlines here the practices and principles that earned him the title World's Greatest Athlete. Jenner is another fine example of someone who has overcome a disability-dyslexia has been a challenge throughout his life. Using the premise that life is a decathlon, Jenner guides the reader through the 100-meter run, the long jump, the shot-put, and other sporting activities. Strategies are presented under these headings, which are supposed to guide the reader through life's problems. Although the idea is a good one, his strategies and dedication to hard work are conveyed through sports metaphors, weak writing, and vanity. Equally awkward is the author's resort to third-person dialog about himself, and the overuse of quotes from other publications makes this a difficult read. Although somewhat inspirational, this should be purchased only if a need exists in the young adult area. [Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 6/15/96.]-Priscilla Davis Dann, Gates Mills P.L., Ohio

    Finding the Champion Within

If there is anyone one it the world that knows what it takes to be a champion, Bruce Jenner does. His spectacular victory in the decathlon earned him a gold medal, a new world record and the hearts of America. Jenner offers his legendary formula that he developed and lived by to anyone who seeks to harness their maximum potential and to become a champion.
Growing up, Bruce Jenner suffered from dyslexia. Although, Jenner had an unquenchable thirst to be a champion. In order to become the legend he is today, he had to overcome great hardships of self-doubt, fear, insecurity and anger that always was holding him back. It was Jenner's sheer determination that allowed him to fulfill his full potential and become a champion. Not only in sports, but also on the business side of life. Jenner spent his life developing these championship principles. Along the way, Bruce dared to dream. He knew he had to identify his goals and develop his mind, body and spirit and make them unbreakable. He had to learn to accept setback and defeat, while never looking back.
In Finding the Champion Within, Jenner provides the tools for success, which can be used by anyone and everyone. Using the ten events of the decathlon as a metaphor, Jenner provides a captivating and unusual way to present his motivational material. He has delivered many motivational speeches across the country which has made him a highly desired corporate speaker. Jenner teaches the fundamentals that enable you to take control of your life and realize your dreams.
After winning gold in the 1976 Olympics, Jenner rode the wave of Olympic fame. He worked as a sports broadcaster, public speaker and he also did commercial endorsements. Soon after, he started to spiral downward into gloom and depression. But, using the same methods of rising to Olympic height, he turned his life around and began to rise to the top and reach heights of personal success he had never had before. Jenner provides many life experiences that allows for personal motivation and encouragement to others to find their life's mission.
There are many messages and themes located within this book. Unfortunately, there are so many quotes that Jenner's voice often gets lost. He also leaves out so much information about himself that it's a surprise when, late in the book, he mentions that he has been married and divorced twice and has four children. Behind the quotes, lie very good messages on how to fulfill every ounce of potential one may possess. The author's resort to third-person dialog about himself makes this a hard read. Overall, Finding the Champion Within is very motivational book that makes you feel like anything can be accomplished. This book is a 10 out of 10 and anyone wanting to take control of their life should read this.

A Great Guy Wrote a Great Book!

While Bruce Jenner was training for the 76 Olympics he lived in a small apartment overlooking the San Jose City College track. It was a perfect place for him to live because he could just look out over his balcony and visualize his ten decathalon events on the bright blue track below him. One of my best friends lived in the apartment next to his and thus I got to know Bruce a bit. I was very impressed by him. He had a happy-go-lucky way about him and he greeted everyone he met with a joyful smile. A lot of Olympic athletes lived in this particular complex, but Jenner was the man everyone rooted for. I was over at my buddy's place the day ABC televised Jenner setting the World's Record and winning the Olympic Gold. Every TV in the complex must have been on and the hollering and screaming of support and encouragement for Bruce was so loud it would not surprie me if he actually heard it all the way to Montreal. To those of us lucky enough to have known him, Jenner is still considered a God in these parts. So all these years later, when I saw his book I had to read it. It was inspiring and extremely honest. He revealed a deep inner insecurity that no one back when I knew him would have ever guessed. In doing so, he made it easier for everyone to gain self-acceptance. Heck, I thought, if Bruce Jenner can overcome his doubts and fears to make something of himself in the world, than so can I! I highly recommend this book!
