Library Journal
Although many books on midcareer transition mention the personal and psychological effects of reentering the job market, none of them deals fully with the subject. Byron, a Jesuit priest, economist, and former president of Catholic University of America, surveyed 150 displaced managers to explore the frustrations and demoralization of midcareer job loss. Rather than offering a laundry list of techniques, he uses anecdotes from the respondents to illustrate strategies and inspire continued searching. The book deals with spousal support, religious guides, networking, and literary inspiration as well as examining how changes in the corporate world will affect future career plans. The work, targeted to 40-to-55-year-old middle managers who have been downsized, thoroughly covers the topic in a readable way. Recommended for areas where large-scale downsizing has occurred.-Joshua Cohen, Mid-Hudson Lib. System, Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
