With his wife Martha, Wilson Franklin continues to run the legendary Western goods company founded by his grandfather M.L. Leddy in San Angelo, Texas, in 1922. Known particularly for the multistep creation of handmade boots and saddles that are cherished by ranchers and royalty, celebrities and collectors, M. L. Leddy's store in Fort Worth's Sundance Square has become a destination; the bright neon boot in front, an icon. Continuing the Leddy tradition, each year the Franklins re-create an extensive Leddy's storefront at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, where customers experience the personalized fitting for which Leddy's is famous. It begins when the customer's foot is traced into the traditional leger books and receives a permanent Leddy's number, continues through a custom handmade last, proprietary stitching patterns, fine leather and tooling, and other careful details. The Franklins exemplify the values and traditions of M. L. Leddy in every aspect of their life and work.

The finest handmade boots, saddles, and leather goods that can be found have been made by one Texas family for almost a century. And for just as long, people who pass through M. L. Leddy's doors have been considered part of an extended family with a shared tradition of service and excellence. Now the stories of the products and the people that have kept Texas”and the world”moving in great Western style are collected and paired with historic images from the family's archive and original art photography. Written by Martha and Wilson Franklin, the third generation of Leddy's to mind the store, with author and Texas culture critic John DeMers, and richly illustrated with Mike Marvin's museum-quality photography, this history captures the spirit of M. L. Leddy and the essence of Texas: the strength, the style, and the sense of family that keeps it all real.
