Fine Print: Reflections on the Writing Art

Fine Print: Reflections on the Writing Art

by James J. Kilpatrick

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal - Library Journal
Kilpatrick writes a weekly syndicated column called ``The Writer's Art.'' His first book was a compilation of columns that went by the same name ( LJ 6/15/84). In his new work, Kilpatrick states that writing must be done with love and care. Meaning should be clear, and writers should beware that the English language, while bendable, is also breakable--as seen in many of the author's examples. The second half of the book, called ``My Crochets and Your Crochets,'' is an alphabetical listing of pet peeves, of both the author and the readers of his column. Some of these peeves include the incorrect use of drapes vs. drapery and the yuppie overuse of hectic. This is a great list that will be valuable both for quick reference questions and for amusing browsing. Kilpatrick is sharp and opinionated, which makes this book a pleasure to read and discuss. Writers and anyone interested in the English language and its use will want to read this book. Highly recommended.-- Lisa J. Cochenet, Plainfield P.L. Dist . , Ill.
