What a family! The plot loops around the Harris clan's secrets that include a senate race, a lynching, a new love, a hidden love, and the ties of family, no matter how crazy they are. Derek is the hero and is thrown into all this when his aunt dies. He deals with the situations realistically, and you can't help but cheer him own when he takes on the family bullies. This would make a great series on TV. The plot is more about the family relationships than the actual lynching, but that event is what spurs on the action. Great job. I want more.

This was such a fun read. One weekend, that's it, and I'm usually a slow reader, but I couldn't put it down. Each chapter left me eager to find out what happens next, so much so that I devoured the book. The characters are true to nature and the ending was a surprise, but after I thought about it, it was logical and it all built to that climax. I recommend this book to everyone who wants a page-turner with a thrilling ending.

Fingering the Family Jewels by Greg Lilly is an engaging and very well written tale of family strife. Unlike other books written in the first person, Lilly¿s peripheral characters-- richly written to perfection in their true southern style¿don¿t constantly drag the reader¿s attention away from the observant protagonist, Derek Mason. He has our full attention throughout Lilly¿s first novel in the Derek Mason Mystery series. Derek returns to his hometown, Charlotte, North Carolina, to attend the funeral of his beloved Aunt Walterine. It¿s his first trip home in the seven years since his mother, who Derek refers to as Gladys the Bi_ch, sent him out of state to attend school, apparently because he was gay, therefore avoiding Charlotte's premier family from embarrassment among the city¿s elite. But, was that really the reason she sent Derek away? Once back home, Derek discovers a deeply hidden family secret, one that would dash his conservative uncle's senatorial aspirations. He believes his ignorant, homophobic uncle is unfit to represent the voters of North Carolina. The secret Derek uncovers, with the help of handsome reporter and love interest, Daniel, has far more serious implications than loosing one election. Greg Lilly¿s portrayal of the elite southern family is realistic and believable. As is the case with many powerful families, their shenanigans often read like a soap opera. The Harris clan keeps everything to themselves--their secrets and perhaps even their genes. From page one, Fingering the Family Jewels is a thoroughly engaging read. Lilly leads the reader right smack into the thick of the plot and doesn¿t let up until the last page. I anxiously await the second installment in this new mystery series by Greg Lilly.

Perfect. This is a romp through a Southern family and all the secrets they hold. A gay son returns to Charlotte, North Carolina and finds out more than he could ever imagine about his family - accidentally while investigating a possible murder that his Uncle Vernon could have be involved in. Vernon is running for U.S. Senate, and Derek needs to know if his suspicions about the murder are true. A cast of characters that act as only family can. It seems Derek being gay is the least of the family secrets. I recommend this book highly.

Fingering the Family Jewels takes you on a rollercoaster ride of discoveries and insights into family dynamics. Derek comes back to Charlotte, NC to the family that exiled him because he was gay. While there he discovers family secrets that will turn the righteous family inside out. The story is engrossing and it is hard to put the book down. This is one of the best mysteries I read this summer ¿ the action doesn¿t stop and the relationships are so true to life. The sexual tension is high between Derek and Daniel AND between Derek and Mark, but the scenes don¿t get into mechanics, which is a sign of a great writer ¿ we read enough to get the idea and our imaginations can take it as far as we want. I would share this with my mom. Share it with your mom, unless she¿s like Galdys the B**ch!!

I won't re-summerize the plot, but will say this is a fine book. Lots of action and diverse characters - I could picture each person and understood where they were coming from. Derek is the hero. Mark is conflicted. Daniel has motives. Aunt Ruby is fun. Gladys and Vernon make my blood boil. Buy this book. The plot twists take you where you couldn't guess. And the family jewels (the stars of the Harris family) do get fingered!!
