Overview

As Thanksgiving rolls around, Aldo Zelnick—a fifth-grade foodie if there ever was one—is flummoxed by his best friend Jack's refusal to try new food. Jack, who famously eats nothing but peanut butter sandwiches for lunch, is so finicky that he's even grown squeamish about Aldo's incessant talk about food. Meanwhile, a family friend has opened a new restaurant, and Aldo, Jack, and Bee are invited for a kitchen tour and cooking lesson, and to help serve the homeless on Thanksgiving Day. With flash mobs, ...

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Enid Portnoy
Here is a story filled with imaginative black-and-white drawings of real kids with eating preferences and problems in the school cafeteria. Imagine that hot tray atmosphere of pizza, and more pizza versus anything green or orange, which might be called healthy! The book is part of an alphabetical series of “Aldo Zelnick Comic Novels,” filled with laughter and creative ideas. Fans of the “Wimpy Kid” or “Amelia’s Notebook” series will welcome Finicky as a glorified comic tale with 160 pages of fun. From the first page of gallery photos of Aldo and his family and friends, readers will begin to identify with Aldo’s strong feelings about change in the school environment, particularly menu revisions for the cafeteria at Dania Elementary. Read all about what may change, and chuckle all the way through the funny sketches and clever ideas. If any words are confusing, refer to Oceanak’s extensive “Word Gallery” for meanings. This is all about food—or is it? Teachers and staff offer advice about what to eat and why, but it is a definite “hard sell” for Aldo and his friends to accept. To them the changes are unjust and it is impossible to think that Mondays would not always mean pizza and more pizza available. Readers will read about foodies and survival eaters, and learn plenty of new and “dangerous” things the teachers tell Aldo is good for him to make his body “smile.” Read about how Aldo slowly changes his mind; maybe it has something to do with how good the food can taste, especially if you are VERY hungry. The book is full of surprises, with extra things added to capture and keep a reader’s attention. There are plenty of new food definitions, and drawings of interesting looking foods, with recipes provided. There is even a neighborhood map so readers can see how Aldo and his friends get back and forth to school, and details about future Aldo Zelnick books, with preview chapters to examine. Fans will appreciate details of an Aldo Zelnik fan club they can join for free. This is the sixth novel for author Oceanak, and it is sure to tickle a young reader’s funny bone. Eating in a school cafeteria may never be the same! Reviewer: Enid Portnoy; Ages 7 to 12.
