Finzi: Clarinet Concerto

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Andrew Farach-Colton
The more I hear of Gerald Finzi's music, the more I wonder why he's not more popular. The gifted English composer wrote some of the most immediately appealing music of the 20th century, and yet he remains largely undervalued. This outstanding and inexpensive recording should encourage many more music lovers to discover the joys of Finzi's sweet and gentle art. The Clarinet Concerto is a masterpiece, with melancholy moods that are beautifully brightened by the music's luxuriant and breezy tunefulness. But everything on this generously filled disc offers similarly alluring, if serene, charms. Clarinetist Robert Plane's silken tone makes the most of the concerto ...

Clarinetist Robert Plane's silken tone makes the most of the concerto and the five bewitching bagatelles, while conductor Howard Griffiths inspires the musicians of the Northern Sinfonia to play with rapturous tenderness throughout.
Barnes & Noble - Jim Svejda
One can only hope that this fine new version of Gerald Finzi's Concerto for Clarinet and String Orchestra will be the first installment of Finzi cycle on Naxos. A work of deeply felt emotions and almost Brahmsian richness, it is the equal of similar works by Carl Nielsen and Aaron Copland, or indeed of any 20th century clarinet concerto. The English clarinettist Robert Plane and his colleagues in the Northern Sinfonia conducted by Howard Griffiths give an eloquent, intensely committed performance of this gorgeous work. Coupled with about a dozen Finzi miniatures -- including the exquisite Five Bagatelles for Clarinet and Strings -- this is an ideal introduction to a unique voice of English music.
