All Music Guide - Marjorie Ellen Ruhlmann
Based on the life and times of New York City's most beloved mayor, Fiorello La Guardia, this show won the 1959 Pulitzer Prize for drama, a rare feat for a musical. It was the first success for the composer/lyricist team of Jerry Bock/Sheldon Harnick, and was Tom Bosley's Broadway debut in the title role.

    A reviewer

This is an awesome cd because it represents the first collaboration of Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick. (audiophiles need NO further comment) The score ranges from great Razz-a-ma-Tazz "Gentleman Jimmy" to amazingly heartfelt "'Til Tomorrow" from tender and tugging "Home Again" to laughingly, magically biting "Politics and Poker". It was an auspicious musical debut, and the score remains one of the most tuneful, sweet, memorable music and lyrics cds from Broadway...and it is more than 50 years old!!!
