Overview

In the gripping conclusion to the action-packed “standard bearer” (Booklist) of zombie series, the threat of death is given new life.

Benny Imura and his friends have found the jet and Sanctuary—but neither is what they expected. Instead of a refuge, Sanctuary is a hospice, and the soldiers who flew the plane seem to be little more than bureaucrats who have given up hope for humanity’s future. With Chong hovering between life and death, clinging to his humanity by a thread, Benny makes a startling discovery: A scientist may have discovered a cure for the zombie plague. Desperate to save Chong, Benny and his friends mount a search and rescue mission. But they’re not the only ones on the hunt. The reapers are after the cure too, and they want to use it turn all the zombies into superfast shock troops—and wipe humanity off the face of the earth.

In this riveting conclusion to the Rot & Ruin series, the battle to end all battles is just beginning.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Kate Conklin
Benny's best friend is slowly turning into a zom, and he is running out of time to save Chong's humanity. Thanks to a crashed jet full of research, Benny is sure that a cure is possible. If he can manage to find the last missing pieces, scientists in Sanctuary might just be able to cure Chong and save the world. This is no easy task, however, because Saint John and the Night Church are set on ending human life once and for all. The reapers send people into the darkness with their knives and are making their way from village to village, burning everything that stands in the way of their goal. Surrounded by zombies, reapers, and devastation, Benny must pick up where his brother, Tom, left off and rescue humankind from the terror of the undead. Maberry continues to terrify in this satisfying fourth book in the Rot & Ruin series. The author develops his characters so well that it is easy to empathize with even the most frightening villains. The depth of the story makes this whopping 544-page novel read quickly, and the action never relents. Fans of the other books in this series, and even those new to Maberry's zombie world, will enjoy the conclusion of Benny's story. Reviewer: Kate Conklin
Kirkus Reviews
Maberry delivers a fitting conclusion to his popular Rot & Ruin series. Filling in back story throughout, this fourth novel picks up three weeks after Benny and his teen allies discovered the elusive jet that guided much of the series' story arc. Now bunkered in a monastery that also serves as a government laboratory, they await the fate of their friend Chong, who was bitten by a zombie at the end of the third novel. As the teens search for a missing government researcher who may just hold the antidote to the zombie plague, religious zealot and psychopath Saint John continues his genocidal holy war, using an army of living dead. The focus of this novel is less on gory battles (though there are still plenty to keep fans entertained) and more on successfully tying together the characters and storylines from the series. The suspense comes instead from the teens' race to find a cure for Chong, save their hometown from zombie attacks and ultimately regain control in their part of the new American Nation. Benny's conscious realization that he has crossed over from boy to a man with a future ahead of him and that his generation must fix the problems of the previous one will particularly strike a chord with adolescent readers. In the end, this gripping zombie saga is really about Hope & Love. (Science fiction. 13 & up)
Booklist
"[Readers] will be taken by this finale, which manipulates the large cast with wonderful clarity."

I loved every bit of this book! An excellent end to the Rot & Ruin series. Just when it seems that the world is going to end, up rises Benny Imura and his friends to save the day. In 537 pages there are so many ups and downs and sideways that happen to Benny and his friends that I found my emotions roller coastering all over the place as well.

Not only are Benny and company fighting the zombies to stay alive, but they now have a new enemy in The Reapers. Determined to send humankind and zombies alike into the darkness Saint John and his crew are wreaking havoc on anyone that gets in their way. When Benny finds coordinates to where Dr. McReady and a possible cure could be, hope springs new for their friend Chong who is slowly deteriorating with the zombie disease. But will The Reapers get to Chong and send him into the darkness before Benny can get back with the cure?

I love the bravery and heroics of Benny, Nix, Lilah, and Riot. And I can't forget Captain Ledger and his dog Grimm, an excellent duo that help Benny and friends. I really liked how much Benny has matured into his own person in this last book. He quits trying to be just like his brother Tom and becomes a hero/legend in his own right. I found myself forgetting though that Benny is still a young person. He is only 15 years old and having to deal with so many decisions and emotions that would crush even an adult. He has matured way beyond his years which is understandable in this new world that has come about because of the zombie disease.

If you are a fan of zombie stories, if you enjoy YA and teen hero's then I definitely recommend this series for you. Fast-paced and full of adventure and calamity, I'm definitely a fan!

Producers should mak it a movie

I really hope they make it a movie. I think it would be a great storyline and a superb action movie. Zombie movie always have an adult as the main character and it would be cool to have a teenager as the main character because i can relate to that character.

I really had a hard time getting into this book. The first 2/3rds bored me silly. I almost gave up halfway through. But I did not and the ending was worth it.
