Overview

Three women were dead with no clues in sight, and a guilty defendant walked the streets of Mobile once more. Ellery Brown, Deputy District Attorney, has reached a dead end on the Satanic Slasher serial killings investigation and lost faith in the jury system through an unjust “not guilty” verdict. She is ready to head home and call it quits for the week but her plans are interrupted when she stumbles upon a fight in a shadowy downtown alley. But this fight is unlike any she’s ever seen before and leads her into a world of darkness and witchcraft, populated with subhuman ghouls and a power-hungry madman, Bastian. She also meets Cain, a man whom Ellery isn’t sure she should trust, but finds herself strongly attracted to despite her misgivings.
With her case load piling up, Ellery concentrates on solving the gruesome murders that have been haunting the Bay area for months, all the while discovering more about the mysterious Cain and feeling an ever-increasing threat from Bastian. With the revelation that she is supposedly a member of the “Old Clan,” her own roots become key in discovering how to defeat Bastian and protect her city. Her friends, Jeannie Simpson, Charles Elliot, and Lola Hastings, each help her along the way in both her professional career and this new, confusing world she finds herself thrust into. In the end, only Ellery can discover her power and stop the murders, but at what cost?

Entertaining read at a great price! Check it out!

Saunders' freshman effort is a success! I'm not usually a fan of books with paranormal twists, but I was drawn to this one for the legal aspect and the coastal setting (Mobile, AL). I was surprised to find myself enjoying the paranormal characters once they showed up and even looking forward to their development. Saunders doesn't skimp on the narrative just to get you from one big scene to the next, either. This book is well thought out and entertaining - and at a great price! I hope Saunders shares more of Ellery's adventures soon!
