Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The fourth book in "The Magic Elements Quartet" is best read as part of the series rather than independently, since the children's experiences with water, earth and wind provide some context for their adventures with fire in this final book. Mallory Loehr has created a fantasy world the children enter by traveling through fire—fire that turns its flames into curling arms and throws out sheets of parchment with directions written as riddles. The fire swallows the children into a world populated by an insecure and impolite robot, an ugly but gentle Cyclops, and a wise, patient blacksmith living in a cave. This is a Random House Stepping Stone book, so it provides some mild adventure for younger readers or those who read with difficulty, but it is a long way from the exquisite prose of C. S. Lewis' fantasy worlds or even the exuberant and imaginative detail of Harry Potter. The book includes a page of temporary tattoos for children "to spread the magic." 2001, Random House, $11.99 and $3.99. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: Karen Leggett
