Overview

Each of Carlos Castaneda's books is a brilliant and tantalizing burst of illumination into the depths of our deepest mysteries, like a sudden flash of light, like a burst of lightning over the desert at night, which shows us a world that is both alien and totally familiar -- the landscape of our dreams.
Fire from Within is the author's most brilliant thought-provoking and unusual book, one in which Castaneda, under the tutelage of don Juan and his "disciples," at last constructs, from the teachings of don Juan and his own experiences, a stunning portrait of the "sorcerer's world" that is crystal-clear and dizzying in its implications.

In a most thought-provoking and unusual work, Carlos Castaneda continues his tuteluge under don Juan, the Yaqui Indian sorcerer--constructing a stunning portrait of the "sorcerer's world" that is crystal clear and dizzying in its implications.

The only series of books worth reading

It's honestly hard to write a review that does justice to the magnificent works of Carlos Castaneda. I read the book Journey to Ixtlan at the age of 19, whereupon I laid it down and cried for a solid hour. It felt like I had been waiting for something to come along to give me the meaning and purpose I sought in life, and this was it. How to explain? It's understandable that these books wouldn't appeal to the masses. After all, the concepts espoused in them, such as losing self-importance, taking responsibility for your actions, and living a life of frugality and awareness, are as far removed from mainstream Western values as humanly possible. If I can say one thing, it's that the reader should approach this series of books with an open mind and a willingness to suspend any preconceived beliefs and notions of human beings and our place in the world and the universe. I've read so many reviews and seen so many people that scoff at Carlos, or try their hardest to discredit what is, to them, probably the most dangerous set of ideas and beliefs our modern culture has ever been witness to (in an abstract sense, that is). After reading the entire series of books, I find that there is nothing in them that hints at contradiction, and that the flow of the series from beginning to end is a mastery of 'the spirit' and the impeccable values that don Juan's lineage of sorcerors sought to instill in the apprentice Castaneda from the very beginning. The point of view of 'Mr. Everyman' that Carlos writes from is ingenious and, in my opinion, helps lay out the incredibly abstract ideas the books all convey in a way that anyone can understand. My life has changed utterly, has been given a meaning and purpose, and has been made at once much easier and much harder since my eyes have been opened to the reality of the world we as humans have created for ourselves. I recommend these books to absolutely anyone and everyone, although I'm certain that most people wouldn't be willing to open themselves up to the truths and amazing possibilities contained within. So much time has been spent trying to discredit the details of Carlos Castaneda's personal life that the actual message he brought to the world is lost. I pray that whoever finds these books for the first (or 100th) time realize that they contain the only real truths our culture has seen in hundreds, perhaps thousands, of years. Nothing else even comes close.

    Classis Castaneda

The fire from within is an excellent book in many ways. His experiences with a reality not known to most people challenges our closest held beliefs about how the world is. I think he overdid it with the peyote, maybe thats what killed him (i heard he died of liver cancer) I guess what I think is missing are relevant practices about how to do some of what he was talking about.

    Says it the best

'In the face of the unknown, man is adventurous. It is a quality of the unknown to give us a sense of hope and happiness. Man feels robust, exhilarated. Even the apprehension that it arouses is very fulfilling.'--Don Juan, an excerpt, page 33. Truly, a description of the man and his works
