Fire & Ice: Popular Works for Violin & Orchestra

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Andrew Farach-Colton
Sarah Chang was just 11 when she wowed the music world with her 1992 debut CD. Since then, the violinist has matured rapidly, but she still has a youthful ardor and élan that are perfectly suited to the virtuosic gems in this highly varied collection. She sets sparks flying in Pablo de Sarasate's showstopping "Carmen Fantasy," while "Zigeunerweisen" and Ravel's "Tzigane" are warmed by fiery Gypsy blood. But despite the title -- Fire & Ice -- there is nothing remotely chilly about this disc. Chang's interpretation of Dvorák's glorious Romance in F Minor is as warm as it should be; her Bach and Beeethoven are elegantly tender, and even the hackneyed ...

Chang's interpretation of Dvorák's glorious Romance in F Minor is as warm as it should be; her Bach and Beeethoven are elegantly tender, and even the hackneyed "Meditation" from Massenet's Thais is played with a disarming affection. With sensitive accompaniment from the Berlin Philharmonic under conductor Plácido Domingo here's a maestro who knows how to let the soloist take center stage and richly recorded sound, this recital is a treat for fans of fine fiddling.
Gramophone - Edward Greenfield
There is fire aplenty...but Sarah Chang's playing has nothing icy about it... There is an unfailling feeling of spontaneity conveyed in all the performances here, with each piece made to sound fresh and new.
International Record Review - Robert Layton
Here we have a collection of rightly popular virtuoso pieces played with terrific panache and splendid style by this still very young player.
