Fire on the Strings [Bonus Tracks]

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Richie Unterberger
He may not be quite as well known as the most famous country pickers of the mid-20th century, but for virtuosity and especially sheer speed, Joe Maphis could hold his own with the best guitarists in the genre. It may be that his best accomplishments were as a session man, but he did do some recording on his own that showed his skills to good advantage. His 1957 instrumental album Fire on the Strings catches him at his peak, and features a good amount of his mandolin as well as his guitar on full-band performances also featuring bass, drums, fiddle, and steel guitar.
If there's any criticism, it's that the songs -- about half of them written by Maphis, though there's also outside material by the likes of Earl Scruggs and A.P. Carter -- are just OK country swing numbers, serving primarily as vehicles for Maphis' blindingly fast playing. The 2010 U.K. CD reissue on T-Bird adds historical liner notes and seven worthwhile bonus tracks from 1958 and 1959, especially the four from the 1958 album he did with young rockabilly phenom Larry Collins, Swinging Strings. As you'd expect, these have more of a rockabilly feel, though they're not as all-out rockabilly as the smoking sides Collins did with his sister as part of the Collins Kids. Maphis goes deeper into rock & roll on the two tracks from a 1959 single, "Short Recess" and "Moonshot," and there's also a cut from the 1959 album Hi-Fi Holiday for Banjo.
