Overview

Rosalind Hawkins is a medieval scholar from a fine family in Chicago. Unfortunately, her professor father has speculated away the family money and died, leaving young Rosalind with no fortune and no future. Desolate with grief, forced to cut her education short, she agrees to go West to take a job as a governess to a wealthy man in San Francisco. A boom town in the 1850s, in 1905 San Francisco is the center of culture in the new West, and perhaps there she will rediscover a reason for living. But when she arrives at Jason Cameron's mansion on a hill overlooking the Pacific, she discovers that there are no children, not even a wife, in residence: just the gentleman himself and his enigmatic manservant. Penniless, Rosalind stays despite her misgivings. For the household is very odd indeed. Despite there being but one servant, the huge house is immaculate and food is prepared and served in the most elegant manner. Oddest of all is the master of the house: Rosalind never sees him, but communicates only through a speaking tube, and only at night. But then...she is happy. For her job in the household is to read to him: Latin, French, Greek, German - and she feels herself coming alive once more. As for Jason Cameron, through his contact with Rosalind, he, too, is renewed. An Adept and Alchemist, Master of the Element of Fire, he had attempted the old French werewolf transformation - and bungled it. Stuck in wolf form, over the years he had slowly been losing his humanity. Rosalind is bringing it back to him. But when a rival alchemist offers Rosalind the chance to restore her family's fortune in exchange for Jason's secret, who will she side with? And then the earthquake strikes....

It should first be stated that The Fire Rose is NOT part of the Elemental Masters series, though the world and the ideas of magic are the same. They were created first in this book, and then expanded in the later series keeping with the idea from this book of retelling old fairy tales in more modern settings with elemental masters. So some things perhaps don't gel with the others.
But this is a great book with great characterization. It might not be the most dramatic plot, but you do really care for the characters and their well being. Much like Beauty and the Beast, this is more about the two characters and their feelings than about any crazy action going on.
If you like fairy tales, definitely check this out. Mercedes Lackey fans should also be well and truly happy with it.

Why is this book not listed with the other "Elemental Master" books? This was the first book where it all was introduced. So why is it always by itself on the list? Doesn't make any sense. Otherwise, the book is fine.

I guess I am having to admit my age. I enjoyed this book so much that I recently bought it for my Nook. My paperback version is still on the shelf, but I like to reread it on lengthy trips, hence the Nook.

If you enjoy getting a new look on an older story this is a good book for you. Mercedes Lackey manages to turn the tale of beauty and the beast into a story not only about beauty and love, but also magic and finding oneself. The characters are well thought out and the story draws you in until you actually think that this could really happen-maybe even to you. Her characters are human and intriguing and you can easily see yourself in the characters that she describes. If you've enjoyed her previous novels this one will be right up your alley.

I love romance books but this was fabulous as it portrays 'beauty & the beast' only there's no 'Steamy Gratuitous Love Scenes' it was a nice break as so many authors seem to think that's the only thing women want to read about. Highly Reccomended!!

I really enjoyed this book. I have read it three times and I plan on buying it instead of borrowing it from the library. I love how you can just picture what is happening in the story. I recommend it to anyone.

Mercedes Lackey has quite outdone herself, to be honest. In this treasure, Rose Hawkins meets Jason Camoren. Jason is an eccentric invalad with tastes that run into the arcane, more than just 'sometimes.' Rose is to read strange books to him through a macanical tube. At first, he keeps her in blissful ignorance, but she stumbles upon one of his secrets. You see, a rail barron such as Jason has many secrects. Jason is a Fire Master, and probably one of the most powerful ones to ever exsist. When a Salamander calls Rose to his personal rooms, she stumbles upon the beast that is Jason Camoren. Jason, due to his own arrogance and pride, stupidly tried a magic that he was ill suited for, and, if it was for anything, it would have been Earth Magic. He is part wolf, and is searching for a cure. But what he finds is a decent soul he could trust. The thing i enjoed most about the book was its beautiful plot, tantilizing charictors, and its delves into the magicks of a Fire Master and Air apprentice. I would recomend this book to most anyone whom has wanted to believe in magick, or who believes.

I have read every book that Mercedes Lackey has written, and though I love them all, this is my favorite. My copy is so thoroughly worn, I'm thinking about buying another. Ms. Lackey combines romance and magic in a way that will keep you up and turning pages long past your bedtime. It's definitely worth purchasing even if you've never read it before.

one of the best books i have ever read, and i have read a lot. it is hypnotic, and mystical, but not so much as to not be believable. it requires little imagination to get caught up in this story, even if you have read it many times, which i have. it is a rich and well weaved tapestry. just the right combination of real life and magic. i loved it.
