Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-This British import has a satisfying domestic reality, spiced with some very unusual dragons. When college student David Rain begins rooming at the home of Liz Pennykettle and her 11-year-old daughter, Lucy, he becomes aware of a variety of unusual happenings connected to the clay dragons that Liz creates and sells. As David slowly learns about the family's past and abilities, he has to decide whether to accept Gadzooks, the special dragon Liz made for him. Lucy's attempts to save the neighborhood squirrels from a scheming neighbor are a second plot focus. A fictional story David writes for Lucy about these animals mirrors real developments in their lives, creating an unusual story-within-a-story. In spite of the dragon's eye staring out from the cover, readers may not find what they expect here-there are no magical battles or world-spanning quests to be found. Instead, d'Lacey has created a realistic relationship among David, Liz, and the appealingly strong-willed Lucy, and his dragon's small size is mirrored in the limited magic it performs. Information about the dragons' past and the promise of further stories from David leave ample room for the sequel. Fire Within is a smooth read and an original addition to dragon lore.-Beth L. This is a great book! Apparently in the other reviews they thought it was the worst book ever and that it only talked about squirrels and not dragons well if you read this one first then Icefire then you will see how the squirrels and dragons are related and that in Icefire there is alot more about dragons. I found this book very interesting for all readers and I can't wait for Firestar. Read this book and if you have, read Icefire even if you don't want to. Its great!

This book Rocked. The people that say it sucked are crazy. It is not entirerly about a squirle. It is about a boy named David who moved into a house that has clay dragons in it that come to life but most people don't notice it. Any way it is about David who gets a clay dragon who he named Gadzooks. Gadzooks is a writing dragon and helps david write a story about squirls. Mainly after you read all of the books in the sires you realize that David bends time and space with his stories. It is a awsome book and I highly recomend it!!!!!!!!!! P.S. I am a big Book love and read most fantisy book in the states of Idaho, Utah, Wasington, and mainly in 25 states.

Now I understand why some people are confused and disappointed by the first book (whats with the squirrels, I thought there would be more about dragons) but I have read all of the books and trust me it gets much better I promise. So instead of wimping out at the first chapter give the series a chance... unless your scared >:)
