Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
When antiquities dealer Alex Benedict and his assistant Chase Kolpath find items from the estate of noted physicist Chris Robin, who vanished mysteriously 40 years earlier, they uncover a story of experimental space yachts set adrift and mysterious ships that suggest contact with other dimensions. An intriguing mystery involving the possible true sentience of artificial intelligences adds another layer to the plot. VERDICT McDevitt's sixth far-future mystery featuring Alex and Chase (Echo; The Devil's Eye) delivers a complex and attention-grabbing puzzle that should please fans.

    Worthy successor to Seeker

I rather enjoyed this tromp into the Benedict universe. McDevitt's previous two novels(Devil's Eye and Echo) both seemed a little rushed in their style as opposed to the slow build of Seeker, Polaris and A Talent for War.

The only part that felt a little forced was the AI storyline but it was a necessary device to move the story in the direction that brought us to a conclusion point.

Whether this be his last adventure or simply a jump-point that takes us on a host of new adventures, this novel is fun, intelligent and highly recommended by this reader.

    Enjoy.

    Firbird

I have read at almost everything Mr.McDevit has written and enjoy his work. No exception here. If you are new to this author don't start here, start at his early works. Excellent sci/fi author.

    Great stuff as usual

I can only hope there is a #7 in the series. Alex Benedict and Chase Kolpath are two of my favorite people, and they live in a time and place I would like to live in myself.

    Pretty formulaic

I'm not really sure why I bought and read the entire series. I think it is because I liked the first book and just kept reading them.

All of the books pretty much follow the same pattern.

    1) Historically significant event
    2) Artifact associated with the event
    3) Alex & Chase find our look for said artifact
    4) Attempt(s) on their lives
    5) They discover some historically or culturally significant event associated with their journey
    6) They triumph historically

The books are short and easy to read and the premise of most books is reasonably interesting.

If your're a Science Fiction space opera fan, you might find the somewhat Indiana Jones connection interesting.

While the books aren't bad, they certainly don't represent the best in the genre.

great entry as the lead sleuths search for a lost astrophysicist that takes them on a wild adventure

Karen Howard arrives at the office of Alex Benedict and Chase Kolpath wanting to hire them to find good prices for her late sister Elizabeth's estate. After insulting Chase by demanding to meet with Alex, she explains her sibling was married to famous physicist Chris Robin who had theories on multiverse realties and vanishing ships before disappearing over four decades ago. Chase explains to Karen there is no market for items owned by a scientist. Alex tells Chase that Chris is famous for vanishing just outside his house; his junk should sell well.

Alex tells Chase they will look into the disappearance though they will not solve it as their investigation will drive interest and value up. Chase cautions Alex that if they solve the mystery value collapses. Thus they begin the odyssey when retired Dr. jerry asks about the Robin items. Thus the pair visits the Christopher Robin Society and soon travel to planet Villanueva, home to abandoned raging AIs while the inquiry turns as convoluted as the missing Abonai vessel that became "lost" six years ago .

The latest Benedict-Kolpath science fiction mystery (see The Devil's Eye) is a great entry as the lead sleuths search for a lost astrophysicist that takes them on a wild adventure. Besides not pooh the name of the scientist, this is a fast-paced thriller from the moment Karen meets skeptical Alex. Fans will enjoy Alex's narration of what happens to Chase and him as his partner leads him into several hair-raising escapades.
