Children's Literature - Kathie M. Josephs
This book is awesome! Ever catch a firefly and put it in a jar to watch the lights? Well, now that I have read more about fireflies, I wish I had not done that. I had no idea that fireflies are beetles. As a kid, I guess I thought of them as "special" flies. In fact, there are over 2,000 types of fireflies in the world. This short book is full of interesting details. One detail in particular sticks out: I learned that some adult fireflies do not eat anything at all. Each page is its own short chapter, accompanied with a photograph that supports the information and reinforces understanding. Words that are included in the glossary have been highlighted throughout the text. I like the way comparisons are made so that the reader can picture the descriptions of fireflies in his or her mind. For example, "Fireflies are up to 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) long. This is the same size as a paperclip." At the end of the book, there is a page that provides instructions on how to make a model firefly using ice-cream spoons. There is also a page that supplies websites for additional information. This book is perfect for any child who is interested in insects and science. It should be in every classroom library and every school library. This book would be a perfect gift to give a child.
