Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sara Lorimer
This collection of eight folktales is impressive in its variety: a Scottish ghost story set at Samhain, a Russian story about animals in a cabin in the winter, an Austrian story about a goblin providing a hungry family with food, a Russian story about praying on behalf of trees, a Czech story about the months, a Russian Babushka story about the three kings, a Canadian story about bears keeping the sun in a bag over the winter, and a Scottish story about Cailleach and Bridie. An evil stepdaughter, hungry wolves, trickster goddesses—all the classic elements. The stories are written in a slightly formal, archaic style frequently found in fairy and folktales. The book can be read for pleasure, and it also will work with classroom sessions on winter or folktales. Every page is illustrated with full-color watercolors that compliment the text beautifully. Gr 2-5- This collection of seasonal folklore introduces readers to the Celtic and Gaelic festival of Samhain , or Summer's End; Christmas Eve in Austria; the Jewish New Year of the Trees (Tu B'Shevat ); the Twelve Days of Christmas in the Czech Republic; the Twelfth Night in Russia; and Candlemas observed by the Slavey people of Canada. Each tale is accompanied by a brief introduction, setting the time and place for the story and providing necessary background information. Exquisite borders frame the text and lush watercolor illustrations enhance the narratives. Magical, mystical, humorous, and thoughtful, this anthology will be thoroughly enjoyed by independent readers and is a perfect choice for sharing aloud around a warm fire on a cold winter's night.-Rachel Kamin, Des Plaines Public Library, IL
