Overview

Attorney Rachel Gold knows her way around a courtroom, but back in her hometown of St. Louis and on her own after a stint in a big Chicago firm, Rachel's cutting a path through a more dangerous terrain - the cutthroat tactics of divorce law. The case she's just landed called Landau v. Landau is sure to be a slugfest. But even Rachel doesn't expect it to land her in an upscale exercise class at a chic health club where the downside is murder. Rachel puts on her sweats and heads for Firm Ambitions, where Eileen Landau is just one of the many rich, bored wives who have found the dark, handsome fitness guru Andros irresistible. And he's got a photo album filled with naughty pictures of his conquests to prove it. Rachel sizes up Andros as a con man, albeit a con man with buns of steel and a body to die for. Unfortunately for Eileen, he does. Their aerobic and erotic love affair ends with a final very private workout - and Andros's sudden death from cyanide. But the really bad news isn't Eileen's broken heart and fear of being charged with murder. It's Rachel's beautiful, long-time married sister Ann. She knew Andros, too (too well), and some carefully planted evidence has made Ann, not Eileen, the number one suspect. Now Rachel has a personal as well as a professional stake in finding Andros's killer. It's a complex puzzle that takes an unusual twist - from all the beautiful women scorned and left fit to kill, to Andros's sleazy activities that seemed to have gone beyond the bedroom. There's much more to this case than meets the eye, and someone very powerful and desperate has no qualms about befogging the investigation...and reminding Rachel Gold that one dead body can easily lead to another - her own. This taut, suspenseful, and exhilarating mystery thriller offers another top-notch adventure - inside and outside the law - for red-hot female sleuth Rachel Gold.

When the sexy owner of a hot St. Louis exercise studio is murdered, Rachel Gold investigates. But finding the right "woman scorned" turns far more complex and deadly, with Rachel herself becoming a target. Part of the "Books That Take You Anywhere You Want To Go" Summer Reading Promotion.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
An amorous and energetic aerobics instructor named Andros comes to an untimely end in the third outing for St. Louis attorney Rachel Gold (after Grave Designs and Death Benefits ). It turns out that Andros has been romancing a number of his students (porno pictures provide evidence), among them Rachel's sister, Ann, who becomes one of the suspects. Together with her mother (with whom Rachel now lives) and her raunchy sidekick Benny Goldberg, Rachel delves into a complex network of Andros's business and personal connections, persevering despite death threats, obstructive witnesses and noncooperative attorneys. Kahn, a lawyer himself, has a keen eye for details, both legalistic (Rachel is merciless to those less intelligent) and familial. Although the pieces fit together a bit too neatly toward the end, Rachel remains one of the more engaging sleuths on the mystery scene. (July)
Library Journal
Series protagonist Rachel Gold (Death Benefits, Dutton, 1992) is a good divorce lawyer. Here, she agrees to help Eileen Landau, a friend of her sister, who wants to ``drop'' her pandering husband. Rachel's investigations uncover more than she bargained for, however, when police accuse her sister of murdering Eileen's lover, a hunky aerobic stud muffin-also known as a gambler. Now that her sister is involved, Rachel switches into high gear, and the widely publicized sex scandal fuels high-speed action and consummate thrills. Good narrative and a great read.
