Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Anna L. Jarrett, PhD, ACNP-ACNS,(University of Arkansas)
Description: This is an update of a 2007 handy pocket guide by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American College of Emergency Physicians on how to handle household emergencies.
Purpose: The purpose is reflected in the title. It clearly and concisely enumerates what to do to handle emergencies, from arriving on scene to secondary check.
Audience: The implication of the title is that it is written for families. However, students, nurses at all levels, EMTs, and ancillary healthcare personnel could benefit from this book.
Features: The best part of this book is the alphabetical organization of typical emergencies one could face, and it is fairly inclusive of those encountered at home. The compact size also makes this a great glove compartment resource. The illustrations are not in color, which would have added to the appearance of the book. The pale blue, small print may be difficult for the elderly readers to see.
Assessment: Because the previous edition was published five years ago, this update was necessary. This is a very handy resource for the household emergency, although it includes information on AED placement for both lay persons and providers. I personally like the book and will keep it close at hand.
