Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Vincent F Carr, DO, MSA, FACC, FACP (Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences)
Description: The focus of this book is on what one must understand when preparing to test for American Board of Internal Medicine certification and recertification. It also briefly explains the test and how to approach it with test-taking strategies before moving into the main areas of study. The previous edition was published in 2008.
Purpose: Because medicine is progressively adding information, it is quite possible to lose the forest for the trees, making this effort is commendable. I also congratulate the authors for bringing together some of the best reviewers and contributors in internal medicine..
Audience: This book helps internal medicine residents, who traditionally search the journals for the latest studies, become grounded in the basics which tend to be less comprehensively discussed during everyday rounds. The authors are seasoned trainers who are actively teaching. One of the unique aspects of this book is that the authors invite current residents to share their individual memory joggers and mnemonics to help others.
Features: Each chapter presents the basic terminology and definitions and explanations of the basic physiology before going into individual syndromes and disease states. Numerous pearls of clinical significance appear in the margins. There are no references, as this is a study aid and not intended to be a comprehensive textbook. Finally, the index is well organized and comprehensive.
Assessment: This book covers just about everything succinctly and this edition is improved with many color photographs.
