About the Author

Thomas E. Baudendistel, MD, FACP, is Associate Director, Internal Medicine Residency at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, California.

Tao Le, MD, MHS is Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics and Chief, Section of Allergy and Immunology at University of Louisville. He is also affiliated with the Division of Allergy and Immunology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Peter Chin-Hong, MD, is Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine at The University of California at San Francisco.

Description: This is an update of a study guide for those preparing for the internal medicine certification boards. The previous edition was published in 2011.
Purpose: As a study aid, this book highlights some of the absolutely must-understand concepts of internal medicine. While there is no guarantee that what is presented in these cases will be the same as what will be in the examination, it does cover many of the concepts extremely well.
Audience: This is a book for every internal medicine resident, but it is also a superb book for the experienced clinician who wishes a succinct update of internal medicine focusing on the essential facts.
Features: The book begins by explaining the American Board of Internal Medicine Examination and process. This is followed by 17 chapters aligned with the topics of the examination, such as allergy and immunology, ambulatory medicine, cardiovascular disease, geriatric medicine, woman's health, etc. Each chapter is broken down into topics; for example, the endocrinology chapter covers pituitary disorders, adrenal disorders, disorders of lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, testicular and ovarian disorders, etc. The topics are organized using bullet statements, numerous figures, key facts, and full-color graphics. There are outlines of relevant laboratory tests, imaging studies, and full color photographs. There are a few questions strategically placed to orient readers to the type of questions they might encounter in the examination.
Assessment: This is a comprehensive and readable study aid that has a tremendous amount of practical information, not only for the examination, but also as an update for clinicians who simply wish a concise book for review.
