Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Manish Aggarwal, BS (University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine)
Description: This book bills itself as a guide to help medical students successfully navigate the match. The book addresses the various steps of the process from picking a mentor and planning the fourth year to navigating the match list with tips for each subspecialty. It uses multiple graphs provided by the National Residence Matching Program (NRMP), but does not address the Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP).
Purpose: The purpose is to help students navigate the whole process of successfully matching to desirable programs. While much of this information is provided by medical schools to their students, this book allows students to look at the information on their own time.
Audience: This book is written for students planning on applying to residency programs. It is most appropriate for students in the latter half of their third year.
Features: It fully addresses the process of matching successfully, presenting information for medical students, starting with the planning of their fourth year. To account for the differences between subspecialties, it provides general overviews of subspecialties.
Assessment: This book is a good concise resource for information on the match process and how to plan appropriately. However, whether a medical student purchases this book is dependent upon the resources provided by the school. There do not seem to be a lot of changes from the previous edition. One glaring omission is the absence of information on SOAP for students who do not match.
