FOUR SOLDIERS. ONE WAR.

Asteroid miner Mary Rodrigo and freighter owner Mattim Abeeb are green draftees of the Society of Humanity, forced to fight for Earth—a planet they’ve never even seen.

Major Ray Longknife and his lover, Senior Pilot Rita Nuu, are career soldiers, invested with the cause of the Unity Party—and its ambitious new president.

These four soldiers on opposing sides of the battle are about to discover the true nature of this terrible war: a quest for profit—from the high command of both sides. What they will risk is nothing less than their lives. For although truth may be the first casualty of war, it’s not going to be the last…

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
“Moscoe delivers the goods.”—Steve Perry, New York Times bestselling author
“A lot of fun…a refreshing change from the standard good guy/bad guy divisions in military SF.”—Jack McDevitt, National Bestselling Author

“Space scientists talking about science fiction often disparage the way space battles are depicted. Moscoe won’t be a target for any of those attacks: he’s got it down…I finished the novel wanting more.”—LRC Publications On-Line Reviews

“Good escapist fare.”—Locus

Library Journal
As the Society of Humanity and the Unity Party wage a war in the far reaches of space, soldiers on both sides of the battle realize the bitter truth that underlies a conflict based on profit and power. Moscoe's (Lost Days, Ace, 1998) fast-paced military sf adventure presents a grim look at the reality of war and the cost to those who risk their lives for the causes of others. A good choice for most sf collections.

The first casualty is the troops' belief that their military leaders are competent. The second casualty is the troops' belief that their top leaders care more about them than they care about their careers. The third casualty is the troops' belief that their political leaders are interested in something except power and money. The fourth casualty is the troops' belief that the war is about more than some fat cat making another megacredit. (Sounds a lot like Viet Nam, doesn't it?) Well written, well proofed, well ebooked. This is the re-release of the first of Shepard/Moscoe's Society of Humanity books, about a century before the Kris Longknife books. The characters in this series are much more believable than Kris. Good read.
