Overview

Two broken-hearted best friends plus one wild, drunken night in Las Vegas equals disaster for 29-year-old real estate agent London Harris and restaurateur Bernard Phillips. After both are dumped by their mates, London and Bernard jet off to Vegas to forget their problems, only to wind up with new ones when they wake up in bed together and realize that they're married.

As best friends, London and Bernard were totally in sync, but as man and wife, they are polar opposites. They end up fighting about everything from dirty laundry to overdue bills, and soon find their lifelong friendship starting to crumble under the pressure.

They plan to annul the marriage, but when London's grandmother, Essie, stumbles upon their secret, she challenges them to seek God and His plan for marriage. Convicted by Essie's words and the Bible, they agree to try to make the marriage work. Will Essie's constant encouragement and scriptures be enough to hold the sinking marriage together?

London Harris has just learned that her boyfriend, Creighton, who she's dreaming of forever with, is already someone's husband. Heartbroken, she and her best friend, Bernard, share a few scoops of ice cream. Bernard Phillips shares with London his intentions to pop the big question to his live in girlfriend, Vanessa. However, Bernard finds that Vanessa isn't exactly feeling the same way for him. Where do broken hearts go? Las Vegas, the city of sin. `Whatever happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.' That is unless you're related to Essie Harris, London's grandmother, who already knows that something in the milk ain't clean. When she learns that London and Bernard got married while intoxicated, she quotes scripture and verse why the two should continue with their marriage. Will she be able to make London and Bernard understand the importance of being husband and wife? As unbelievable as it may sound, Bernard is ready to take on all of his husbandly duties. He's loved London forever and now that they are married he's willing to do anything to ensure her happiness, even if it means hurting himself. London is so used to having things her way that she's closed off from even allowing the thought of happily ever after with him to enter her mind set. As they journey through a long, challenging time the two crumble under the pressure. Without GOD and a will to fight, London finds herself leaning back into Creighton's direction and Bernard is ensnarled by Rayne. Is it too late for the Phillips to make it last? "First Comes Love" written by Shana Johnson Burton is a charming story about the road less traveled. I enjoyed the characteristics, especially the very opinionated grandmother, whose strength and joy in the Lord was uplifting. Now even with the good, I have to admit, I wasn't feeling the illusion of sex. Ya'll know I like REAL SEX! Otherwise, "First Comes Love" is a good read. Reviewed by: Crystal

3 1/2 stars Shana Johnson Burton's novel First Comes Love is an engaging tale of two best friends, London and Bernard. Both have recently been dumped by their significant others and decide they needed a 'pick me up'. So they fly off to Vegas for a fun-filled weekend. Only to wake up the next morning with a hangover and a ring. A wedding ring! Unable to get a quick and easy annulment they arrive back in town to face London's very religious and 'psychic' grandmother, Essie. She notices the ring on London's finger and talks the two into working on their new nuptials stating that God intended for marriage to be forever. Bernard moves in with London and the emotional roller-coaster begins. First Comes Loves shows that marriage is nothing to take lightly. London and Bernard learns this lesson the hard way...through trial and error. I liked the message the book conveys, though some of the scenes appeared unrealistic. Iris Celeste www.irisceleste.com
