K-Gr 3-Sarah is hiding under her covers as Mr. Hartwell asks, "You don't want to miss the first day at your new school do you?" From under the blanket she replies, "I'm not going." When he reminds her how much she liked her other school and asks her to think of all the new friends she'll meet, she imagines a classroom where a paper airplane is flying, a boy is pulling his neighbor's pigtail, and another is blowing a gigantic bubble. Mr. Hartwell finally gets Sarah to stumble out of bed, eat a bit of toast, and get into the car where she slumps down into her seat. At school, the principal cheerfully welcomes her and takes her to the classroom where she is introduced as "Mrs. Sarah Jane Hartwell," the new teacher. There is a bit of foreshadowing that Sarah is an adult, but as she is always partially hidden, the ending will come as a surprise to most readers. The ink-and-watercolor illustrations are full of action and maintain the lighthearted tone. A little subplot in the paintings shows the family cat and dog having their own contest of wills while their owner is trying to get his wife up and out.     All teachers must have this book

    This book is a must have for teachers to read on the first day of school, no matter what grade they teach.

    A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do!

    I read this book to my preschoolers each year on their first day of class. It's a great ice-breaker and lets the children know that just because their teacher is older and supposed to act like a grown-up, he or she is experiencing much of the same 'jitters' that they are.

    Great Story to Start Your Class With!

    This book was read to me at a workshop three years ago. This year I decided to start the kids in my class off with a short story to get them talking and I immediately thought of this one! I can't wait to see their faces at the end!

    My Daughter's First Grade Teacher read this to the class

    My daughter came home from school and couldn't stop talking about this book. I think it was the first book that ever 'tricked' her and she was amazed by the ending... She LOVED it...

    I Don't Want to Go To School Today!

    You'll be surprised and ask yourself, 'Did I read this right?,' at the end of 'First Day Jitters.' The book is funny too, with the character not wanting to go to school on the first day. Everybody will like this book!
