Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cathy Puett Miller
Everyone loves man's best friend! This book from the "First Discovery" reference book series is just the right fit for both beginning and more seasoned readers. Within each colorful page, the authors have included larger print text with simpler words, and smaller print text with more complicated sentences and more challenging vocabulary to appeal to a variety of levels and competencies of readers. The oversized format leaves plenty of room for pictures of different breeds, colors, and sizes of dogs and gives enough detail to be almost photographic and certainly life-like. The publisher even inserts a few of the typical "transparent" pages to add a hint of "what's coming next?" A variety of text formats (single sentences with short paragraphs, descriptions with single-word picture labels, picture borders with large illustrations, statements and questions) draws the reader to the next page. Many of these same text formats are hints as to how expository text works. The end comes a bit abruptly and perhaps too soon, but the journey through the basics of dogs and their part in the world is worthwhile. Reviewer: Cathy Puett Miller
