Overview

Once upon a time a dog traveled the globe in search of the perfect home. He visited many countries, learned interesting facts, and made new friends. And he did find that perfect home ...at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, to be precise. A very special address with a very special family. And now at Christmastime, Dog learns that his new home hosts a very special holiday party. With a lot of important visitors on the guest list, it's going to take a lot of preparation to get this "house" ready for the holidays. It's all paws on deck to make sure everything is in order, from the sparkling tree in the Blue Room to the delicious gingerbread house in the State Dining Room. But Dog is curious about how the rest of the world celebrates and he asks his international guests to share their favorite holiday traditions. And when the festivities start there's no stopping these tail-wagging partygoers! J. Patrick (Pat) Lewis lives in Westerville, Ohio, and is the author of 60 books for children. He visits elementary schools and speaks at literature conferences. This is his second book with his daughter, Beth Zappitello. Beth has a marketing company and lives in Portland, Oregon. Tim Bowers has illustrated more than 25 children's books, garnering such awards as the Chicago Public Library's "Best of the Best" list. Tim lives in Granville, Ohio.

Children's Literature - Heidi Hauser Green
First Dog, the loveable, cuddly hero of a previously-issued picture book of the same name (First Dog, 2008) is back. Having found the perfect place to live, in the White House with the Obama family, he has been enjoying playing games, taking walks, and gardening with the first family. When he catches whiff of the upcoming Christmas Gala, he decides to hold his own canine affair. He adds the word "canine" before "guest" on the invitation, ensuring that each attendee from around the world will bring their faithful four-legged companion along. First Dog plans his party, and then welcomes his guests. He invites each one to share information about Christmas traditions in their home countries. In this way, readers will learn about the holiday in many different countries from an English bulldog (England), a Newfoundland (Canada), a French Poodle (France), a Dingo (Australia), a Chihuahua (Mexico), a Rhodesian Ridgeback (Zimbabwe), an Affenpinscher (Germany), a Neapolitan Mastiff (Italy), a Keeshond (Netherlands), Kangal Dog (Turkey), and of course a Portugese Water Dog—First Dog himself (America). Along the way, readers will learn about some of the White House's festivities, customs and decorations. The party is a success, but the most striking praise comes from a final visitor, who leaves paw marks, crumbs, and a cheery "Bo-ho-ho ... and a Merry Christmas to all!" in his wake. This book is sure to be a timely hit with schoolchildren learning about holidays around the world. Reviewer: Heidi Hauser Green

PreS-Gr 1—Having altered the official invitation to the Christmas Gala in order to ensure that his counterparts from all over the world will attend, the canine star of First Dog (Sleeping Bear, 2009) greets his guests. He shows them the White House, and learns about Christmas traditions and legends from Australia to Turkey to Mexico. The effect is didactic, as one pup after another reels off a little speech, but the tone is upbeat and the illustrations are charming, if a tad stiff. The best scenes involve the pooch's daily life romping about the White House. "Dog," a Portuguese water dog, is clearly meant to be Bo, and readers occasionally see the legs of the First Family and an arm that they can surmise to be the First Lady's shooing him away from her vegetable garden.—Eva Mitnick, Los Angeles Public Library
Kirkus Reviews

The team that created First Dog (2009) offers this Christmas-themed sequel narrated by the same bright-eyed, black dog that now lives in the White House. The canine main character is clearly intended to be the Obama family's Portuguese water dog, Bo, although he is called simply Dog in the text and the Obamas are shown only in partial glimpses. Dog sends out a mass invitation to the White House Christmas Gala to his canine friends, who arrive one by one to share Christmas traditions from their own countries. Small spot illustrations of each dog interacting with the First Dog are supplemented with postcard-style illustrations of relevant holiday customs. This doesn't break any new ground, and the amount of information on holiday traditions isn't extensive enough to be useful, but the dogs are appealing. (authors' note) (Picture book. 5-9)
