Barnes & Noble - Douglas Wolk
Before the Delaware record label Jade Tree became the emo-and-beyond indie powerhouse that it is in mid-2000, it spent the early '90s releasing a series of seven-inch singles and EPs that formed a bridge between the '80s punk of the Washington, DC, area and the present. This double-disc set collects all of it -- good, bad and indifferent. This double-disc set collects all of it -- good, bad and indifferent. But even the lesser stuff like an EP by Railhed, who clearly found early Fugazi really inspirational is fascinating for its affectionate documentation of a scene that hadn't quite cohered yet. Leslie's roaring, disorienting "all Tricked Out" single is the only document of a promising band whose two key members were subsequently folded into Shudder to Think. Universal Order of Armageddon's single is a sort of corrosive near-hardcore that faded away from the scene later on. The oddest of the bunch, and maybe the best, is a three-song single by the defiantly anti-rock Eggs, who took the spacey and slow route for "Sexual Tension," and stripped down even further for a cover of the standard "Fever." And the harsh stop-on-a-dime virtuosity of Pitchblende and the guarded passion of Edsel, in retrospect, pointed the way toward the state of the Punk Planet generation at the dawn of the new millennium.
