If you're a beginner in Hebrew, this is your book. If you're a beginner who must learn Biblical Hebrew in college, grad school or seminary, and the intro course there does not use this book (investigate!), WORK COMPLETELY THROUGH THIS BOOK BEFORE TAKING THAT COURSE! Do it with a study group for effectiveness. Your sanity will thank you later as you help the classmates writhing in agony around you. This book is not college-level, and will not by itself enable you to 'test out' of Hebrew intro, but that isn't its purpose. After you work through this book, the intro Biblical Hebrew course will be manageable and perhaps even enjoyable.

This book has a lot of meat to it, but is fun, too. As well as focusing on biblical Hebrew, stressing vocabulary and grammatical forms used in the bible, the authors include a 'tall tale' in each chapter (a familiar story, in Hebrew, at the current reading level of the student). Assumes no prior knowledge, not even the alphabet, but moves right along. I found success studying this book with a small group of people, for mutual reinforcement. A highlight for us has been the way the book gradually leads us thru the Book of Ruth, starting at a simplified level, with vocabulary hints, and gradually moving to the original, as we progress. Also available are an answer book for the exercises, and vocabulary flash cards.

The First Hebrew Primer is a must have if you are going to take Biblical Hebrew in seminary. It is two semesters of work made enjoyable--how do you say "Old MacDonald had a farm" in Hebrew? Fast paced, but not overbearing. Having the right professor and this book are essentials for the rapid learning of Biblical Hebrew.
