Overview

After having served as a teacher for over forty years, Ardeth De Vries has become a student of the animals in her life. Her work with animals includes: three years of volunteering at an animal shelter, thirty-five years of rescuing abused and neglected Schnauzers, the operation of Broken Arrow- a non-profit organization created to assist people with veterinary expenses for their companion animals, serving as end-of-life consultant, animal loss counselor and board member of Old Dog Haven, a non-profit organization that offers hospice care, assisted living and placement assistance for senior dogs, grief counseling for humans who are mourning the death of an animal friend, locating homes for animals in need, lecturing at animal welfare functions, and teaching seminars and classes related to animal welfare.

De Vries is donating all proceeds from book sales to animal welfare organizations, which is her way of paying tribute to the animals that have been and are an important part of her life.

From the Author
First Light: Animal Voices in Concert is a collection of stories about what animals teach people. The animals are real, and the stories are inspired by actual events. I've dedicated First Light to the animal messengers of this world because they're always willing and able to provide first light experiences for humans. We simply need to listen. It's my hope that people will be inspired, touched, amused, educated, and even outraged as they read this book. I want people to be moved to action as they share my journey with the animals that have been my teachers. There's much to be done to promote animal welfare, and there are many issues addressed in this collection of stories that deserve attention by humans.

What People Are Saying

"It is hoped that this book will open the eyes and hearts of those who can pass the messages on from many sentient beings; that in memory of Sonny the elephant, and in honor of all animals, one day humans will understand that we're all connected and all life forms must be treated with respect and love." Roseann Trezza, Executive Director, Associated Humane Societies

"This title refers to the spiritual awakening which can happen to the receptive mind, which a practitioner of Zen might call satori, or enlightenment: namely a realization that all beings are connected and that all are part of a greater whole. De Vries believes that if we are sensitive enough, contact and communication with animals can help us find this form of enlightenment. Although the message is a deep spiritual one, the stories themselves are simple, well written and delightful." Chris Mercer, (Advocates for Wild Animal Rights), co-author of For the Love of Wildlife

"Anyone who has ever been to an animal shelter will appreciate these stories. They may change the way you look at your own animal friend. If nothing else, give yourself up for a while, read these stories and just smile." Ken Leaman, D.V.M.

"The stories were so well written, the life lessons throughout the book were strong and so well stated. . . I smiled and cried. . . I know this book will stir people who read it to action and a better understanding of the treasures our animal friends are and the respect that is required of all living things." Shari Bibich, Shelter Manager, Whidbey Animals' Improvement Foundation

    Uplifting

I am not a big fan of stories where animals talk (maybe thanks to the traumas experienced listening to Dumbo and Bambi as they lost their mothers). So I started reading this with a chip on my shoulder already. But I was soon swept up into the stories and quickly became choked up with the plight of the animals involved. We humans can certainly be jerks, but the author points out that animals don't judge us, despite the poor behavior exhibted towards many of them. They take what comes and are grateful for the smallest kindness, returning unconditional love, Certainly some of the stories are sad, but in the end they will lift you up with the knowledge that there are still many people trying to make up for the members of the human race that haven't a clue about the proper treatment of animals. (Proceeds from the sale will go to animal welfare, also. So this would make a great holiday gift.)

    For all animal lovers . . .

A must read for all animal lovers. Sit back and take a morning stroll along the beaches of Washington state while you listen to the activities of the animals and their human companions along the way. We are reminded through the delightful, sometimes heart-breaking, stories that each being comes to Earth with a right to exist. At the urging of the author, we are asked to become involved in some way to address and promote animal welfare. Somehow, we humans need to be reminded of their rights and ultimately take action to protect our dear animal friends. The watercolor by Ellaine Shannon on the back cover is truly delightful as it adds personality to the characters involved throughout the book.

    Calling All Animal Lovers

Here is a book you won't be able to put down. Sometimes funny, sometimes touching, always poignant, this collection of beautifully written animal stories is a most rewarding read. I highly recommend this book for all pet owners (adults and children alike) and for anyone who appreciates a well-told, heartfelt story. Another great thing I've learned about this book is that all of the proceeds will go to well-deserving animal welfare agencies. I personally have purchased five copies to give this year as Christmas presents, and I urge you to do the same and help some animals as well.
