Overview

Make mealtime magic for the whole family!

The link between the food that children eat and their physical and general well-being is widely recognized today. Armed with this easy-to-use cookbook, you can be confident of preparing enticing food that will give your child the best nutritional start in life.

Tempting Recipes. From first purees for weaning babies and delicious snacks to tempt toddlers with tiny appetites to imaginative and nutritious meals that the whole family can enjoy, First Meals includes more than 150 fully illustrated recipes, all of which have been tested on a panel of babies, toddlers, and young children. Nutritional breakdowns of recipes are included so you can be sure your child is enjoying a balanced diet.

Annabel Karmel is an acknowledged expert on all aspects of feeding the under-fives. She offers clear and sensible advice on healthy eating for every stage of a young child's development and explains how each key stage affects a child's nutritional needs. Also included are effective strategies for dealing with specific problems, such as feeding a reluctant eater or a child with food allergies. Packed with delicious recipes, practical advice, and labor-saving tips for food preparation, no household with young children should be without this cookbook.

That's what makes Annabel Karmel's First Meals so useful. It offers plans and recipes in such an easy and varied way that you're sure to find something your child will like. For instance, if your preschooler won't eat the lightly curried Singapore noodles, maybe he'll go for the totally safe chicken and rice. She refuses oatmeal? How about yogurt pancakes?

The book starts with feeding at four months and ends at age five. First-time parents should particularly like the section on introducing solids to newborns, which gives directions for making baby food and freezing it in ice-cube trays. Then, in a year or two, they can look up Karmel's strategies for dealing with the picky-eating syndrome that every toddler goes through. In addition to age-appropriate recipes, throughout the book is sensible information on hygiene, nutrition, snacking, and what to feed a sick child (turns out that it doesn't' t matter as long as he drinks).

Most of the time Karmel avoids the done-up dishes that cause cuteness overload in so many cookbooks for children. Though she does resort to the occasional cat's face on a pizza and heart-shaped chicken nuggets, I can easily forgive her because the rest of her food is honest and flavorful - good enough, in fact, for grown-ups. I'm a pre-school teacher and nanny, with a degree in child psychology, and think this is the best child nutrition and meal book I've ever seen. The meals ARE quick and easy, the menus at the end of the book are convenient and practical, and the author shows a true aptitude for the topic of the book. This is a book you can continue to use for 5+ years, and its value far exceeds its price.

This is the best book ever. I highly recommend it to all. This book would be a great shower gift too. The recipes are wonderful and easy to follow. A must to have in any cookbook library.

This is a terrific book! I checked out many books at the Public Library about making baby food and this is the one I HAD to buy. Every recipe I tried my toddler liked. The nutritional and freezing info is extreemyly helpful, and the recipes are easy to make. I especially like the fish recipes and so does my daughter.

This book is very helpful in feeding young children. Sections are divided by child's age; many color pictures add interest too. It was well-received at several baby showers.

As a new mother I was stymied as to what to feed a ravenous six month old. He wanted anything I'd let him have. I didn't know what to give him first, and this helped me start him out right. He now (at 3) eats almost anything put in front of him. I believe it is because of the rich variety of ingredients I started with.

As a working Mom, I found this book a tremendous resource in both recepies and techniques. My daughter (10 months) loves the ideas and hasn't turned any meals down yet! Best of all, what you learn from this book gives you the confidence to expand beyond it's recipies and creates a great foundation for healthier cooking for all!

This is one of the best books of this kind that I have seen. The recipes are easy to follow, and there are great photographs of almost every recipe. There are recipes for everything from purees to first casseroles. I would definitely recommend this book.

I am a first time mom,and found this book very helpful in telling when and what to feed my baby. However, some of the recipes called for some obscure ingedients (parsnip, leeks, rutibaga) that I had to make special trips to the store for. The recipes are simple to assemble and freeze!

This book is fantastic. I had so many questions with feeding my baby and this book has answered all of them. I thought making your own baby food would be too time-consuming and difficult, but this book shows how easy it is with wonderful recipes and great pictures. I have recommended this to all my friends with babies.
