Overview

Paris, L.A., and the world of ready to wear fashion provide rich backdrops for Danielle Steel’s deeply involving story of a gifted designer whose talent and drive have brought her everything—except the ability to erase her past and trust relationships.

FIRST SIGHT

New York. London. Milan. Paris. Fashion Week in all four cities. A month of endless interviews, parties, and unflagging work and attention to detail at the semiannual ready to wear fashion shows—the famous prêt-à-porter. At the center of the storm and avalanche of work is American Timmie O’Neill, whose renowned line, Timmie O, is the embodiment of casual chic, in fashion and for the home. She has created a business that inspires, fills, and consumes her life.

With an unerring instinct for what the next trend will be, an innate genius for business, tireless labor, and sheer fearlessness, starting from nothing, over two decades Timmie has built an international empire that has brought her enormous satisfaction and success. In a world where humility and compassion are all too rare, her humor, kindness, integrity, and creativity are inspirational. Yet as blessed as she feels by her success, Timmie harbors the private wounds of a devastating childhood and past tragedy. She is too smart, too experienced, and too hurt to want much in her personal life beyond a succession of convenient, very limited relationships. Always willing to take risks in business, she never risks her heart.

But despite her well-ordered and highly controlled world, it turns out that Timmie O’Neill is not immune to magic when it strikes. And it strikes in Paris during Paris Fashion Week, when an intriguing Frenchman comes into her life when she gets sick. At first, Timmie and Jean-Charles Vernier are only patient and physician. They become confidants and friends, corresponding at a safe distance between Paris and Los Angeles once she goes home. There is every reason why they must remain apart. But neither can deny their growing friendship and the electricity that sparks whenever they meet.

First Sight is as complex and compelling as modern life itself. Careers, families, histories, losses, duty, obligation, and fear of losing control and getting hurt. It is a tale of daring to take risks, and losing control just enough to have a life, when the opportunity presents itself. When two very different worlds and strong-willed people collide, everything changes in an instant, as they confront the age-old question of whether to lay oneself bare and risk intimacy—or not. Are they brave enough to face what comes next? And will they do it together or apart?

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The latest from the prolific grand dame of the beach read concerns iconic designer Timmie O'Neill. Despite her looks, talent, and good soul, Timmie has had it hard. From an early age she grew up in an orphanage; as an adult she was left by her husband after their four-year-old son died. Career obsessed, Timmie, nearing 50, laments never finding a worthy romantic partner. Steel's repetitive style hammers home the monotony of Timmie devoting her life to her job and trying to find comfort in the hit-or-miss company of model-actor Zack. While working in Paris, Timmie meets and bonds with a married, silver-fox doctor named Jean-Charles. Though he doesn't seem particularly happy in his marriage, Timmie isn't sure how to read Jean-Charles, and complications prevent him from leaving his wife. In between recurring passages recounting Timmie's life and feelings, Steel tosses a couple of curve balls connected to the designer's past that surprisingly don't feel out-of-place. A denouement that had been hinted at throughout the book gives the closing pages some much-needed suspense. Despite the tedium, Steel deftly stages heartstring tugging moments and heated falling outs, the stuff that guilty pleasures are made of. (July)
Kirkus Reviews
The latest from best-selling author Steel. Timmie O'Neill is a youthful 48-year-old woman who rose from humble beginnings to create and run a successful fashion company for the past 23 years. Her life is all work, almost no play and, since the death of her only child and subsequent divorce 11 years earlier, no real love. Since she travels so often to Paris for the prêt-à-porter shows, a friend gives her the name and number of a physician there just in case she needs one. Her appendix bursts, requiring surgery at the American hospital in Paris, where the good doctor meets her. The ambulance triggers memories of the childhood tragedy that left her an orphan at 5, requiring a hand to hold and a sympathetic ear, which the doctor offers. She tells him the story of the car accident that killed her parents, the years in the orphanage as one prospective family after another returned her until she walked out on her own at 16, started work as a waitress and began making clothing on the side. Decades later, when her fashion company brings in a fortune, she donates $1 million to nuns who open an orphanage that she not only supports financially, but in other ways, visiting the children and often joining them for the holidays that she would otherwise spend alone. The doctor, who is going through his own heartaches trapped in a loveless marriage, is drawn to her. The path to her destiny is filled with convoluted peregrinations, but Timmie keeps on and ultimately achieves what she wants and deserves. A novel about love, in all its heartbreaking and splendid forms.

Biography

When it comes to commanding bestseller lists, no writer can come close to Danielle Steel. Her work has been published in 47 countries, in 28 languages. She has been listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the author who has spent the most consecutive weeks on The New York Times bestseller list. She has not only published novels, but has written non-fiction, a book of poetry, and two series of children's books. Many of her books have been adapted for television movies, one of which (Jewels) was nominated for two Golden Globe awards. She has received the title of Chevalier of the distinguished Order of Arts and Letters by the French Government for her immense body of work. In short, to say that Steel is the single most popular living writer in the world is no overstatement.

Steel published her first novel, Going Home, when she was a mere 26 years old, and the book introduced readers to many of the themes that would dominate her novels for the next 30-odd years. It is an exploration of human relationships told dramatically, a story of the past's thrall on the present. Anyone familiar with Steel's work will recognize these themes as being close to her heart, as are familial issues, which are at the root of her many mega-sellers.

Although Steel has a reputation among critics as being a writer of fluffy, escapist fare, she never shies away from taking on dark subject matter, having addressed illnesses, incest, suicide, divorce, death, the Holocaust, and war in her work. Of course, even when she is handling unsavory topics, she does so entertainingly and with refinement. Her stories may often cross over into the realm of melodrama, but she never fails to spin a compelling yarn told with a skilled ear for dialogue and character, while consistently showing how one can overcome the greatest of tragedies. Ever prolific, she usually produces several books per year, often juggling multiple projects at the same time.

With all of the time and effort Steel puts into her work (she claims to sometimes spend as much as 20 hours a day at her keyboard), it is amazing that she still has time for a personal life. However, as one might assume from her work, family is still incredibly important to her, and she maintains a fairly private personal life. Fortunately for her millions of fans, she continues to devote more than a small piece of that life to them.

Good To Know

Along with her famed adult novels, Steel has also written two series of books for kids with the purpose of helping them through difficult situations, such as dealing with a new stepfather and coping with the death of a grandparent.

When Steel isn't working on her latest bestseller or spending time with her beloved family, she is devoting her time to one of several philanthropic projects to benefit the mentally ill, the homeless, and abused children.
