Overview

Even before he had a name for it, John A. Star suffered from debilitating episodes of anxiety and panic. From the age of nine onward, he recalls being paralyzed by feelings of impending doom, frightening thoughts, and physical symptoms that are hallmarks of this mental health issue.

This is a memoir of Star's life with anxiety, and, more importantly, his journey to a more mentally healthy life. Amid the personal reflections and humorous recollections that many individuals with emotional issues will find all too familiar, you'll also get a first-hand look at the steps he has taken on his long road to recovery, and the valuable lessons he has learned along the way.

From the what-if thinking that plagues the anxious mind, to self-medication, to simple time management skills, this book serves as a part memoir and part self-help guide that will appeal to current and former sufferers of anxiety and depression, as well as those who care about them.

Further, Star also encourages a discussion of the bigger picture of mental health treatment in America, where many individuals are simply prescribed a bottle of pills and sent on their way-and reveals who is truly reaping the benefits of this antiquated care.
