First Thanksgivingby Anne Kamma, Bert Dodson
Nearly half of the fifty-two Pilgrims at the First Thanksgiving were children age sixteen and younger. What was it like being part of the historic harvest festival that inspired our modern holiday? How did the children contribute to the feast? What did they wear? Did they have turkey and pumpkin pie? Written from a child's perspective, IF YOU WERE AT THE FIRST THANKSGIVING answers these questions and others about the festival, life in the new settlement of Plymouth, and more.

We got this book to add to our holiday collection. My first grader loved it. It is not a story, but factual information about Thanksgiving that is realistic and set up in a question-answer format. We learned quite a bit about the early Americans that is not commonly talked about, such as their table manners, the division of chores, what they really ate and drank, how often they bathed, (not much!) etc. This book sparked discussions about pilgrim life and how hard they worked. It helped bring to life the time period through things a child would be interested in. I highly recommend this book.
