Eyewitness - bringing the natural world into your living room.

Vast, sometimes strange and always spectacular, fish are masters of three quarters of the earth. The Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Video: Fish takes us on an amazing underwater journey into a massive habitat that is not our own and profiles a sampling of species that are more numerous than those of reptiles, amphibians and mammals combined. The fish as a symbol has been important in everything from Greek and Biblical mythology, to astrology (where the Pisces completes the Zodiac sign), to our love lives where we are often told there are "plenty more fish in the sea." For the purpose of our video, a salmon (sometimes known as the king of fish for their number and sheer determination) guides us through the life cycle of a fish. Though fish are largely divided into two groups, saltwater and freshwater, the salmon is a rare example that can cross over. They are born in freshwater with a determination to find the sea. When they are old enough they swim downstream, sometimes covering as much as five miles a day. The first fish appeared over 500 million years ago without many of the current characteristics of a fish, except for a spine everything else grew from there. Over the half hour running time of this captivating video, we learn in detail the anatomy of a fish and how it uses its components such as scales, fins and a swim bladder to their advantage. Although man has sometimes been guilty of fishing waters clean, the biggest threat to fish is actually fish themselves. Their diets and food gathering efforts, along with a wide array of defenses are discussed. Other questions are answered in between: how good arefish senses; which fish have a sixth, electrical sense; how do they work together in partnerships and schools; which fish can survive on land and which can fly? Back to our salmon, after time in the sea, they return to the freshwater where they were born to spawn. This amazing journey upstream against the currents is filmed with incredible detail including salmon jumping up waterfalls when necessary. After laying their eggs, many die of exhaustion from the journey and never live to see the cycle continue with their offspring. Fish are our earliest living ancestor. We have marveled at their speed as sail fish can swim faster than any land animal can run, we have learned hydro and aerodynamics from their shape, and have been in awe of their beauty-there isn't a known color that does not exist on a fish. This breathtaking video allows us to broaden our appreciation and understanding of truly some of the most extraordinary creatures on Earth.
