My favorite book of all time!
I was totally addicted to this book (and the whole Polk Street School serires) in the late 80's when I was in grade school. The idea of this story is that Emily suspects the new girl, Dawn, of stealing from her. I feel for both girls, actually. Emily feels frustrated with the idea that Dawn may have stolen from her, and also a little bit jealous that Dawn seems to have it all together (pretty hair, perfect clothes, neat stuff, pierced ears, etc.) and appears to be a faster runner. On the other hand, Dawn is really insecure inside and only acting perfect on the surface to cover it up. It is hard moving to a new state, and I think I would have felt like Dawn did! I think this book is fun and easy for children to relate to, but also could probe more deeply into the isues of conflicts and friendship.

    I Also Recommend:

    Fish Face Wins the Race

I found this easy reading chapter book was serious yet written in a non depressing way. The accessabilty to students for the book is that its design of the characters and their problems are similar to those that modern day children may face. The book allows the young reader to identify with complicated issues of making accusations and bearing proof against a popular person. As the character makes a new friend and deals with the issue of suspecting someone of theft she also deals with loosing a friend through the dissappointment of betrayal. I feel that this book could be useful as a launching for philosophical discussions and could be used when exploring social issues. The problems in the story are common yet new to young people and should be examined.

    An adorable, relatable book!

I was addicted to this book when I was in elemenary school in the late 80's. I read it--it must have been twenty or so times! It had a pull on me. I liked all of the Polk Street School books, and would highly recommend them to school-aged children, or to adults who wish to take a brief repose and revert back to the simple life for a little while! Patricia Reilly Giff inspired me to become an author!
