Overview

When Bob "Bubba" Rich decided to embark upon his own quest - to qualify for the Metropolitan South Florida Fishing Tournament Hall of Fame - he didn't realize the amount of strength he would need to accomplish his goals. By the time it all was over, he had exhibited as much strength, valor, patience, and fortitude as any angler could muster.
Consider his goals - to take ten species of gamefish, on specific types of tackle, with difficult-to-achieve minimum weight requirements: a twenty-five-pound barracuda, a twenty-pound permit, a twenty-five-pound dorado, a blue or white marlin, a twenty-five-pound wahoo, a nine-pound bonefish, a sailfish of any weight, a six-pound largemouth bass, a one-hundred-pound tarpon, and, finally, an eighteen-pound snook.
Fish with Rich as he probes the waters of south Florida and the Bahamas, searching for the ten species that will gain him entrance to the Hall of Fame. Enjoy the incredible highs he feels when finally catching a fish that qualifies; share with him the unfathomable lows when things go wrong, and he just can't catch a break on some of the gamefish.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"I enjoyed the book immensely. I loved the personal insights into some of fishing's legendary guides and personalities. I can thoroughly identify with the commitment to 'catch and release' . . . a fine book on fishing and on life, too."—President George H. W. Bush

"If you love fishing adventures with a fly rod, and want to understand the characters who do, this book will give you hours of pleasant reading."—Lefty Kreh

"Fish Fights really touched a chord with me. I have fished and loved the Florida Keys for over fifty years. Bob Rich brought me back to the memories of the waters, the guides, the relaxing life, but most of all, the champion gamefish."—Curt Gowdy

"In the reading of Fish Fights I was reintroduced to some of my favorite places, folks, and memories...But more importantly, in Bob Rich's Met Hall of Fame quest I was able to see the angling spark that was ignited in all of us so many years ago. Read Fish Fights for yourself and see the spark become a bonfire."—Flip Pallot

"Fish Fights is extremely well written...a truly outstanding book that is easy to read, filled with meaningful facts, and tells a fascinating story."—Mark Sosin

"Fish Fights is a fish story told well. It has all the necessary ingredients to separate it from the norm. Humor, crusty characters and most importantly the 'Quest,' are what fishermen like myself can relate to. Entertainment and helping to find the cure?...Count me in!"—Jose Wejebe

"Don't be fooled by the title...this book is about a lot more than just fish. Bob Rich has captured the essence of the characters that I've known for over 30 years."—Rick Ruoff

"The hardest type of fish writing is storytelling. Yet Bob has written a wonderful and adventurous journey through the different neighborhoods that each species required and through some of the most famous land sights. Filled with well-drawn characters and with great love and respect for the fish he is looking for and its environment."—Chico Fernandez

    A Great Read

I picked up a copy of this book on my last visit to Islmarada at the Redbone Gallery. It is a wonderful read for anyone interested in saltwater fishing, the Florida Keys, or if you're just looking for an interesting fishing story. Rich does a great job of blending story telling and useful fishing lessons, while describing the atmosphere of the Keys and some of its locals and their hangouts. Rich¿s writing is pleasing to read and is accompanied by lots of photographs. I¿m greatly hoping he will produce another work in the near future.

The Sport , Laughter and the Conch

This was an excellent read that I read with my 10 year old son-- who by the way knows every weight of every record fish. We enjoyed the dry humor the vocabulary of the writer and the different regions that were fished. We also liked the rules tagged by the IGFA for each species. I have already recommended this book to other novis fishermen.

    Warm and Witty

Excellent read, even for a non-fisherman. The human 'characters', fish and south Florida come to life in colorful, wonderfully interesting detail. The author successfully blends autobiographical glimpses of his own life with warm and entertaining stories of south Florida characters, all held together by the fishing quest that is the book's reason for being. Great companion book to fiction by James Hall and Randy Wayne White, based in south Florida.

One ticket to the Florida Keys, Please!

An amazing story of an amazing quest. Bob Rich does for fishing in the Florida Keys what Jimmy Buffet did for margaritaville! Destined to be a classic.

    Reads like a great novel!

I've read an advance copy of this book, and even though I'm not a fisherman, it doesn't matter. It reads like a great novel. The fish tales are great as well as the personal stories told so vividly!

Even a non-fisherman would enjoy this book.

I received an advance copy of this book and have thoroughtly enjoyed it and I don't even like to fish! The author does a great job of making the characters in the book come alive. But I must advise you reading this book may cost you a trip to the Florida Keys!
