Overview

Back in 1957, Theodor Geisel responded to an article in Life magazine that lamented the use of boring reading primers in schools. Using the pseudonym of "Dr. Seuss" (Seuss was Geisel's middle name) and only two hundred twenty-three words, Geisel created a replacement for those dull primers: "The Cat in the Hat." The instant success of the book prompted Geisel and his wife to found Beginner Books, and Geisel wrote many popular books in this series, including "Hop on Pop," "Fox in Socks," and "Green Eggs and Ham." Other favorite titles in this series are "Go, Dog, Go!" and "Are You My Mother?" by P. D. Eastman, "A Fly Went By," by Mike McClintock, and "Put Me in the Zoo," by Robert ...

    Still Loved after Fifty Years!

I loved this book when I was little. When I saw it was still in print I had to buy it for my kids. They adore this. It is one that you will read over and over. My three-year-old daughter loves the voices we do with this. A funny one for Mr. Carp, the police man, the fire chief and one for the little boy narrating the story. Early readers enjoy the repetition and pace, so it is a great for reading skills. This is a great cautionary tale of what can happen when you don't follow a grown-ups instructions, but mostly - this is just a plain fun book. I am so glad to see that many of my beloved books are still in print. Hooray for P.D. Eastman.

I read this book to a pre-school class. They were so absorbed, some of them almost forgot to breathe! And later, when I asked my wife who was there with me, how well I'd done, she told me that she had been so anxious to see how the story ended.

    A family favorite

A must have. I had the Dr. Suess beginners series as a child in the early 70's. I had such fond memories of these books I bought a bunch for my daughter. She is only two, but we love to read these at night. She asks for the books and refers to this one as "Otto". "Please read Otto, Dad". Even though she cannot read yet she will love these books later. These are books she will be able to give to her kids.

    Great Book

I remember reading this book when I was a kid. I remember checking it out numerous times and reading it over and over. I recently had my kids read it and they love it too.

    Please read Otto again!

My granddaughters love Fish out of Water. I have been reading it to my five year old twins since they were two years old. They are now five and still ask me to read Otto. Now my two year old granddaughter wants me to read it to her over and over again. When reading repetative sentences, the girls love to repeat them outloud over and over again. The book can also be read as an interactive book. Children can use their hands to show what happened to Otto. I think this book should be part of every child's library from 2 to 6 years old.

    My kid Loves it!

My two year old daughter loves this book. She insists I read it to her atleast thrice daily. She points to the book and says 'Otto book'. She takes it with her on all her travels. I highly recommend this book.

    A fishy tale

This was my favorite book as a child!! Now I have the joy of watching my father read and reread it to my daughters. Otto's tale is filled with empathy and fun. It is a good story for beginner readers, too.

A must read for every child (and adult!).

At age 37, this is still as exciting a book as it was when I was 9. I have always loved this book. The creative illustrations have the reader and listener engrossed quickly. It is a book you can read a hundred times (believe me, I have) and still love it every time. I usually tuck one in with every baby gift I give.
