Fish-Tree-Water Blues

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Roberta Penn
J. J. Cale, Ani DiFranco, Robert Cray, and Etta James are some of the artists out to save mother earth on FISH TREE WATER BLUES. Whether they'll succeed in helping the Earth Justice Legal Defense Fund's campaign to preserve wild salmon, old-growth forests, and fresh waters in the Pacific Northwest is an open question. What's not up for debate is the quality of this 13-song compilation CD. A mix of old and new material, cover versions, and originals, this is a disc with its heart and soul in the right place. Some of the tunes have previously been released, but Tracy Nelson's cover of Memphis Slim's "Mother Earth," Etta James's gospel version of the Eagles' "Take It to ...

Some of the tunes have previously been released, but Tracy Nelson's cover of Memphis Slim's "Mother Earth," Etta James's gospel version of the Eagles' "Take It to the Limit," DiFranco's folk-rap "Fuel," and Keb' Mo's "Victims of Comfort" all speak to the courage and consciousness that the Earth Justice organization extols. Cray offers an unreleased live version of "The Forecast Calls for Pain," Cale wrote and recorded "Stone River" for the occasion, and soul and gospel singer Mavis Staples contributes a new version of "I'll Fly Away" for the set. There are also intriguing collaborations between jazz saxophonist Branford Marsalis and blues guitarist Joe Louis Walker "The Road You Chose" and blues harpist Charlie Musselwhite and Bob Weir's Grateful Dead offshoot, Rat Dog "Take Me to the River". A portion of FISH TREE WATER BLUES sales go to the Earth Justice Fund, but it's the wide but friendly scope of the music and the quality of the cuts that make the disc worth taking home.
All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Fish Tree Water Blues brings together a diverse group of musicians with a shared interest in the most important thing on earth: the earth itself. This album benefits the Earthjustice Legal Defense fund and spreads the word about the importance of a clean planet. Focusing mainly on blues and folk, the impressive artist roster includes classic performers like Etta James, Ruth Brown, Mavis Staples, John Hammond and John Lee Hooker. Contemporary artists like Ani DiFranco and Keb' Mo' also contribute to this worthy cause, along with Branford Marsalis and Roomful of Blues. The unique combination of blues and ecology makes Fish Tree Water Blues a must for blues fans and nature lovers alike.
