Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
The beginning of this nonfiction text describes the amazing process of how salmon return to the same place they were born in order to lay and fertilize their eggs. Interesting photographs in color show the salmon in the ocean and an illustration shows the salmon's life stages. In a sidebar we also find out that when you are talking about two or more of the same kind of fish, you use the word fish. When you mean different kinds of fishes, you use fishes. The next chapter explains the parts of the body of a fish, the three kinds of fish, how fish move in the water, and fish senses. A chapter is devoted to how they survive underwater, how they care for their eggs, and how they find food. Some information is given about coral reef fishes, ocean fishes, and a page titled, "Weird Fishes of the Deep." Several pages discuss freshwater fishes and endangered ocean fishes. Part of the "Amazing Animals" series, the text includes a table of contents, a glossary, and an index. There is also a 10-question quiz and a page that lists related books and websites. The sidebars throughout the text provide additional facts. This text is both useful for basic research and interesting to read. Reviewer: Vicki Foote
