About the Author

John Bryan has written for Sports Illustrated and Field & Stream, and is also the author of The James River. He lives in Richmond, Virginia.

Jimmy Carter was the thirty-ninth president of the United States (1977–1981)
and was the 2002 recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. He lives in Plains, Georgia.

Howell Raines worked at the New York Times from 1978 to 2003, ultimately serving as executive editor of the paper. He lives in Henryville, Pennsylvania.
