Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Wayne M. Samuelson, MD (University of Utah Health Sciences Center)
Description: This third edition of a very popular pulmonary textbook is a comprehensive compilation of the information current to the present state of pulmonary medicine.
Purpose: The book intends to be a definitive reference while aspiring to be readable and balanced in its coverage of what is latest and most meaningful in pulmonary disease and disorders. With the rapid expansion of the pulmonary knowledge base and its movement out into different directions, a central reference point such as this is quite welcome.
Audience: The book is written for pulmonologists and trainees in pulmonary medicine. Although it might be useful to students, it is written at a level that presumes previous understanding of basics in anatomy and physiology.
Features: The book is abundantly illustrated with both black-and-white and color illustrations. The color reproductions are surprisingly good and are very effective. Each chapter is well referenced. There is an extensive table of contents that is clear and easy to use, along with a comprehensive index.
Assessment: This new edition of an old reliable textbook is a welcome addition to the rapidly expanding pulmonary disease knowledge base. While not replacing current literature, this textbook does provide a foundation for the pulmonologist, whether in practice or in training. It is an important addition to any medical library or bookstore, and it is a very important contribution.
