All Music Guide - Sean Cooper
Fissures brings together two influential innovators of dark ambient-leaning electro-acoustic composition. Specifically, the album combines Rich's knack for integrating a range of acoustic instruments dulcimer, PVC flutes, steel guitar into alien, otherworldly atmospheres with Alio Die's talent for depths-plumbing, remarkably spatial arrangements which are as uncannily musical as they are subtle and mesmerizing. While the album echoes moments of both artists' previous work Rich's collaboration with Brian Williams, Stalker, as well as Alio Die's 1995 Amplexus release, Suspended Feathers, Fissures manages a singular, wholly organic fusion of ...

This is why I love ambient music so much. The tastes and textures of this CD are incredible. You can almost smell the venting gases emitted from the deep chasm from which the music originates. Though the sound is Earthly deep, it is not dark in the musical sense of the term. It's a shadowy cavern of phosphorescent light. You can feel the cool roughness of stone against your skin but the sound is warmly inviting. You can sense all the geological nuances that spirited this superb collection of tracks into one of the very best ambient CDs I've ever heard. A very enjoyable hour of sound. I'm a huge Jonn Serrie fan too, and this wonderful CD by Robert Rich rates with one of Serrie's best Narada albums, "Hidden World." Good stuff guys. I eagerly await Rich's next journey into the fissures of this planet, or any other.

Let me restate how incredible this CD is. As you fall into the fissures of this album, prepare yourself for an exploration not only of geological discovery but also the survey of one's self. As you listen to this music the first time through it will invoke memories of dreams you've had, and the longing for future journeys dreamed of. Your second passage through and you'll feel like you have actually lived the adventure. About the third or fourth time through and you'll be so mentally quenched and emotionally drained that you may need an hour of silence to digest the experience. At the same time you'll be anticipating the expedition all over again. Blended tracks 1-3 are extremely beautiful and wonderfully dynamic. In tracks 4-7 Rich is ultra red hot. They're also blended and are a story (journey) unto themselves. They're so incredibly deep and moving instrumentally, and are deserving of some kind of special recognition. This CD definetly merits an award. The sounds recorded here are blissfully therapeutic but provocative, and just maybe too seductive to be classified as "ambient music." What one may first think about as background acoustics, will masterfully avail itself here front and center during its exposure. Robert Rich may have redefined his musical genre with this one.
