Overview

More than any other band, Pearl Jam embodies the alternative style that dominates rock today. From their early days as fame-ducking grunge pioneers, through their headline-making battle with Ticketmaster, to their current status as self-assured survivors, Five Against One brings to life Pearl Jam's tumultuous ascent to superstardom in rich detail. A compelling portrait of the band's elusive leader Eddie Vedder and family photos never seen before by the public make this a must-have for every Pearl Jam fan.

    more from this reviewer

    Relevant to a point

This book is just average at best. Considering that I am a huge PJ fan, my average remark isn't flattering to most readers. Granted that I read this book after it had been written 10 years ago, I don't feel I came away with much more than a who's who of Pearl Jam; even that I'm somewhat skeptical about the accuracy of some of the details. The writer meanders the story with the use of quotes from band members, friends, and familiy. At times, you get the sense that the authors writing is based on how close the relationship is with the person being interviewed.

On the good side, I thought the section about Eddie Vedder's upbringing was compelling and very well done...it is a must read for anyone interested in Eddie. Also, I thought the author's work on explaining the meaning of certain songs was good, but you can figure that out by reading about Eddie's childhood.

All in all, if you're a PJ fan, I'd have it on the bookshelf. Otherwise, I'd probably just listen to the best band and figure out their story with learning the lyrics.

    The one to own

Though it paints Ed in an unflatering light, it's quite interesting. It only covers them until early 1998. So if you want something more recent I don't know. Some other books are inaccurate. This one has most-all of the facts right.

    What could have been...

This book couldve been so totally AWESOME if maybe the writer waz interested in the WHOLE band...Shame she only seemed interested in trying to make Ed out to be some kind of attention seeking liar...not bad reading though...

A good book on Eddie Vedder

While reading this, i found that it contained more on Eddie than any other member. I think Neely's constant referral to Dave Abbrusze reveals that she is somewhat sorry for the drummer's dissmissal. The book did contain a very good history on the early days as well as the first 6 years of pearl jam. over all, as a pearl jam fan, i recommend this book to anyone who wants to take the time to read it.

    Neely's Bias Shows

If you're a hard core PJ fan, you've already read this book. If you haven't yet read it, don't waste your time. Neely shows obvious bias in the writing of this book, speaking to ex-band members and dredging up Ed's past. This book should be called 'Ed Vedder: A Complete History.' Neely shows no respect for the band, in particular Mr. Vedder, with the writing of this book. I am sorry that I wasted precious minutes of my life reading this intrusive, judgmental garbage. Do not read this book. Instead check out the band's ONLY authorized book, 'Place/Date' for a much more interesting and inspiring bio of the whole band, not just Ed.
