Overview

The Five Biggest Lies Bush Told Us About Iraq is the comprehensive source on the administration's campaign of disinformation before, during, and after the second Gulf War. From the careful linking of Saddam Hussein with Al Qaeda, to the WMD canard, to the September 2003 damage-control sideshow, AlterNet.org's Christopher Scheer and Lakshmi Chaudhry team up with renowned journalist Robert Scheer to take the full measure of official deception.
They not only lied, the authors conclude; the pattern of obfuscation, misstatement, and half-retraction amounted to a devious entrapment of the American people. The Five Biggest Lies Bush Told Us About Iraq offers the first analysis of this pattern, underscoring that the lying was highly managed. The public did not commit troops, and dollars, to the invasion acting on the best information its government could provide. Instead, we fell victim to a marketing campaign conducted by a small group of influential radicals inside the Bush administration, who were pursuing their own narrow, hubristic agenda.
With U.S. soldiers still losing their lives, Bush's ongoing doublespeak is outrageous. In the authors' words, "The Bush administration continues to stand firm on the bodies of its own soldiers, who are paying a high price for its lack of reason. . . . The soldiers themselves are simply exhausted, homesick, and disillusioned with both their generals who sold them the shining lie of a quick war of liberation and the nation that seems unwilling to be rescued."

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Setting out to prove that "every major assertion that our government put forward to justify the conquest of Iraq has proved false," this broadside (more akin to a long article than a short book) reviews the evidence (or lack thereof) for linking Iraq to al-Qaida and 9/11, and reveals what the authors say is the inflation of Iraq's weapons capabilities and the erroneous assumptions about how long the war would take. Even sympathetic liberals may find the description of "the losing end of a long war of attrition" to be overstating the case. The concise account by veteran journalist Robert Scheer, his son and Chaudhry, editors of AlterNet.org, deftly incorporates dozens of other media sources, including very recent materials like Gerald Posner's Why America Slept. Brilliant exposure of warmongering

This deeply-researched book looks at five of Bush¿s lies, lies echoed by Blair - that Al Qa¿ida had ties to Iraq, that Iraq had chemical and biological weapons, that Iraq also had nuclear weapons, that the war would be a `cakewalk¿, and that Iraq would become a model democracy. Colin Powell admitted on 24 February 2001, ¿He [Hussein] has not developed any significant capability with respect to weapons of mass destruction.¿ But then Bush gave him his orders, so the man of integrity flew the world, lying for war. On Blair¿s allegation that Iraq had bought uranium from Niger, Ambassador Joseph Wilson said, ¿That information was erroneous, and they knew about it well ahead of both the publication of the British White Paper and the president¿s State of the Union address.¿ On 16 March 2003, just before the war, Vice President Dick Cheney said, ¿We believe [Hussein] has, in fact, reconstituted nuclear weapons.¿ On 1 June 2003, Bush said of WMD, ¿we found them.¿ They were all consciously lying. The Iraq Survey Group reported to Congress on 2 October 2003, ¿Information found to date suggests that Iraq¿s large-scale capability to develop, produce, and fill new CW munitions was reduced ¿ if not entirely destroyed ¿ during Operations Desert Storm and Desert Fox, 13 years of UN sanctions, and UN inspections. ¿ To date we have not uncovered evidence that Iraq undertook significant post-1998 steps to actually build nuclear weapons or produce fissile material.¿ They knew this because all the UN and IAEA inspectors, and Hussein Kamel, the director of Iraq¿s pre-1991 WMD programme, had told them so. On 14 September, Cheney admitted ¿Yeah, I did misspeak ¿ we never had any evidence that [Hussein] had acquired a nuclear weapon.¿ Rumsfeld said in July 2003 that no new evidence of WMD had been uncovered during the current administration. The CIA, in February 2003, had warned Bush that national resistance was inevitable after the war. Now this resistance is defeating Bush¿s mad dream of world domination, which has fallen at the first hurdle. The authors call it, `a plan based on delusion executed through a policy of calculated deception¿.

    We Are Being Lied To!!!

If you believe that the war in Iraq is a good cause, think again. The Bush Administration has lied to the American public and they continue to lie to us about the 'progress' that has been made in Iraq. This war was not worth it. Read this excellent book before you vote this November. Bush and his neoconservative chickenhawks must not be allowed to continue on their path of world domination.
