There isn't a lot to dislike here--characters you can relate to, plenty of action, and a story that moves along at a mostly rapid pace. The author does a nice job of introducing Aaron and Shanna before he puts them through the wringer. I liked many of the secondary characters, though I'd have to say I liked Shanna the best. She's strong and knows how to fend for herself, but has plenty of flaws, too. It's fun watching her come into her own and while I wanted her to do the right thing, I think she shows just how human she is by some of her choices.
If I have any complaint it's that the development of Ensel Rhe fell a little short. He's a bit of Elric wrapped up with Drizzt on the surface, but he's not explored too much except for at the very end. His role is reduced mostly to helping Aaron, but I think the character has a lot more potential than that, especially as the series continues.
Overall, a fun read. Can't wait for the next book in the series.

The Five Elements is a fairly straightforward fantasy novel. The alchemy part of the book is intriguing and the fact that Aaron is studying with a master was a huge plus for me. The story has some familiar aspects, such as two friends from a similar background being separated by tragedy thinking the other dead. Aaron's companion on his journey was an excellent character in the eslar mercenary.
There were a few parts of the story that I thought dragged a little bit, but on the whole the book was very enjoyable. The characters were done well and the elemental magic system was uniquely done. This book is a fine read for people looking for a fantasy that is a quick high quality read.
