Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

John and Philippa Gaunt hoped that their mother's renunciation of her magical powers would return them to the normalcy that they craved. What they hadn't known was that the fate of the whole wide world dangled perilously in their young hands. A modern fable about five fakirs who have been buried alive, an evil djinn, and a pair of globe-hopping twins who just can't get a moment's rest.

From the Publisher

Praise for the Children of the Lamp series:
"Kerr puts an ingenious spin on the enchanted-lamp theme in his first novel for children. . . ." --BOOKLIST

"A breakneck-paced, Indiana Jones-style adventure. . . . Kerr keeps the emphasis on fun. . . ." --PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

"[T]he humor is just right, the captivating world of the djinn is faultlessly depicted and expanded, and Kerr balances the resolution with enough uncertainties to draw readers back for the next installment. This work is likely to win new fans as well as please those who enjoyed the previous book." --VOICE OF YOUTH ADVOCATES

"Kerr brings a wealth of invention and a solid grounding of research into djinn legends to his creation, giving the story and its deftly varied episodes a rich texture. . . . Capable writing and a well-shaped plot will reward fans returning to this series." --THE HORN BOOK

Children's Literature - Haley Maness
Action begins from the first page of the sixth book in the popular series "Children of the Lamp." This may pose a problem for readers new to the series, because there is no background information on a single one of the characters, or even a casual mention of the setting. There are also many unexplained words from other cultures used to describe the typical activities of djinn. While this does add culture to the plot, a technique such as this may confuse and distract readers from the well-rounded plot based on solid historical research. Twins John and Phillipa are taken on another magical adventure by their uncle, a professional djinn, when their coming-of-age ceremonial granting of three wished turns into a mystery: an evil djinn, or genie, tries to get their three wishes for himself. The story has the twins traveling all over the world, trying to restore the world's luck. All in all, a good idea, but it could have been executed with more precision and poise.
