Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Krisan Murphy
Written in the words of Victory School's superstar basketball dribbler, Carmen Skore, this book brings the reader into the game. When Carmen's point guard skills do not keep her from fouling out of the game, she seeks the help of her friends and Coach Holland. Unfortunately, Coach Holland has no quick-fix answers. It is her friends, Josh and Tyler, who take it upon themselves to study basketball games on television (a luxury Carmen does not have) to discover a way for her to stay in the game. Carmen's friends teach her that "knowing the problem helps fix it." Eager basketball players, especially girls, will enjoy reading how Carmen overcomes excessive fouling to become an even better superstar. A helpful glossary of definitions and pronunciations is in the back of the book. Young readers will be attracted to the basketball history timeline featuring photographs of long skirted stars in 1892 to the present day American Women's Basketball Olympic Gold Medalists. Every page is illustrated with colorful characters in action. Students in grades three through five will relate to the dialogue, struggle, and victory of Carmen and her friends. The message of teamwork, problem-solving, and disciple are worthy qualities that shine in this book for young athletes. Students can read more of the "Sports Illustrated Kids" books about Victory School Superstars in this twelve book series. Reviewer: Krisan Murphy
